moved to appropriate forum.
I will tell you that item scamming and money scamming are considered 'role playing' and therefore will never be banned or punished by the GMs/devs. Account scamming is a different issue. If someone seems to be attempting to get your username and password, contact a GM immediately. A GM must witness this behavior in order to act appropriately. Screenshots and chatlogs are NOT acceptable evidence.

Heinz Guro asked for my login name and password this past October. I contacted a GM and continued to talk with Heinz Guro in public chat while the GM stayed invisible and watched. Result: one month ban for Heinz Guro and more GM awareness of the situation.Big Crunch wrote:moved to appropriate forum.

Natsuki/s-mack/super-buster/chiribo/heinz guro (and probably other names) tries very hard to keep his conversations out of public chat because he knows he can be "super busted." I haven't been able to trick him like that since. On the other hand, if a stranger is really afraid to discuss something in public...well, I get a little suspicious. Natsuki goes away if you refuse to talk in whisper.
The real world has petty thieves in it. Unfortunately, we have one here too. Best thing I can think of as a player is to refuse to interact or "do business" with him.

I agree scamming is not against the rules but plenty can still be done about it. The seasoned players can put the scammers names out the masses, so others can know of there scams and again the season players can cut all dealings with these scammers. Hopefully we can ostracize them from the game!

Absolutely not - that would be a huge violation of players rights in the eyes of the development team. It defeats the purpose of it being *private* conversation.Jumpy wrote:don't GM have the ability as ircop or ircap on IRC to read whispers ?

Re: SCAM Supiour Super Blaster Salah and so many other name
I had this proposal in a Court House case, but since no meaningful discussion happens there, let's see what kind of feedback it gets under open discussion.
Is there any chance we could get one or more "honeypot accounts" added to the database, such that anyone who manages to log into one of those accounts earns an IP-wide block from logging in for some amount of time?
It doesn't even have to be a very long period of time--maybe 1 hour just like the chat spam autoban. Just the ability to fight back in a meaningful way against these idiots asking for usernames and passwords.

And who is supposed to get to know the password of these accounts?radiant wrote:Is there any chance we could get one or more "honeypot accounts" added to the database, such that anyone who manages to log into one of those accounts earns an IP-wide block from logging in for some amount of time?
Game masters? Those people can ban people who ask for passwords directly, so they don't need it.
Everyone? Then the scammers will also know about them and avoid them.

Re: SCAM Supiour Super Blaster Salah and so many other name
BC's right about the scamming part. In Ultima Online you can literally kill other players and take there stuff. (I don't play but have friends IRL that do. I even DL'd a 14 day trail to check out the game myself) I also believe you could do the same in Everquest. (I've heard some stories)
Unfortunately we don't have a Karma system and implementing one could be abusive if it was based off player input.
The problem with IP banning is that some people are on Static IP's that change. Someone with a Dynamic IP could just spoof there mac addy and get a new ip.
While that might be a little out of the grasp of some, it's actually quite trivial if you kinda know what your doing and well if you got some old NIC's around then it's so easy that just about anyone could get around it.

Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pac Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. Has anybody seen this princess I'm looking for?

Re: SCAM Supiour Super Blaster Salah and so many other name
Ultima Online was one of the pioneers of the mmorpg genre. They tried a lot of features which sound intuitive and really cool in theory (like the aforementioned "kill players and take all their stuff" or "allow players to build houses everywhere") but simply don't work out in practice. There is a lot to learn from UOs past mistakes when creating an MMORPG.MerlinX420 wrote:In Ultima Online you can literally kill other players and take there stuff.

The housing in UO is pretty bad IMO. I like how they did it in LOTRO but it's instanced and not part of the actual game world. I wouldn't mind a system that was a cross between the 2. The idea was discussed one time on here I think but a system to implement it fully was never really devised.
Crush is right as it was a pioneering effort of the whole MMORPG and it's worth at least checking out. There is a free 14 day you can get and it does run on Linux via Wine. The client it's too big but it's still like 1GB so I wouldn't install it if you have a cap on your bandwidth usage.

Frost I had a similar experience when in pm on the Forums Natsuki asked me to zip up my server files and send it his way. He is someone to watch. When he asked it was under the guise he wanted to set up his own server and needed help, but when I offered to guide him through setup he really just wanted the server files. Obviously I didn't give him any files.Frost wrote: Natsuki/s-mack/super-buster/chiribo/heinz guro (and probably other names) tries very hard to keep his conversations out of public chat because he knows he can be "super busted."
