The Liberated Pixel Cup and what we could do with it

Talk about anything, including games and servers not affiliated with The Mana World.

The Liberated Pixel Cup and what we could do with it

Post by Bjørn »

The Liberated Pixel Cup is a two-phase competition that starts with a one-month period (June) where artists can submit pixel art, after which follows another one-month period (July) in which games can be developed that make use of the art that became available in the first phase. There will be winners in both phases. Read the details about it on their website.

The final art guidelines for the cup are yet to be published, but it is clear that their style could match very well with a game like The Mana World. Probably not enough to use it directly in the world we have now, but if this competition is a success I believe there is a good opportunity for a fresh start as well as a solid base for future extension of the available graphics. This is why a few of us are planning to participate in this competition to create a game based on the Mana client and server.

There are a few ways to contribute to this project:
  • First of all you can support the competition by donating money for the organizers and make available prize money.
  • Second, consider taking part in the first phase of the competition, even if you're not an experienced pixel artist. Better yet, start practicing right now! The more versatile the available art is, the more we can expect from the games created in the second phase, including our project.
  • Third, maybe you're interested in helping us directly. We're not terribly well organized yet but we need to find a way to create a quality gameplay experience including nice environments, storylines, sound and music. Also some changes to the client are expected to be needed as well as finishing some parts of the server.

Hey guys. I just wanted to mention that the art part of the contest has officially begun and is underway.

I think that the artists here would have a lot to offer, especially considering the similarity in general visual style.
