what i wanted to make clear: on your picture it looked as if the light source were very low on the ground. what i meant was that the light source is behind, left and over the viewer. the carvings were a good idea, but they look quite 2 dimensional. there should be a light source in the southwest. you should also keep the light source in mind when shading the curve tiles.
