I'd have to agree with Elven that, especially in an action MMORPG, not being able to fight a monster takes away a large level of immersion and eralism from the player (not that it has to be extremely realistic, but when is the last time you couldn't hit someone because another guy had hit him first?...

Heh if we do this instead of a cross I'd suggest a tombstone/gravestone, which should be a bit more universal. I'm not sure about the idea though. It's not realistic that the player gets actually burried where he dies, and also the gravestone will need to disappear too or we'd have too many of them...

Bear: that would be a legitimate way to do things if we decide to use a tile-based walk system. Since we still haven't chosen whether things will move on a pixel based area or not, it's a little too early to say one wasy or the other.
