We're already using hardaware support, if you enable hardware acceleration option in config file or using the opengl version. well what you could do, is modle alot of npcs after players, and when players get a name or something under them, it would be a differnet color so you could tell it was a npc...though for this to work good, you'd need alot of variety of hair styles, and body proportions (or classes, or sprite changi...

http://www.boomspeed.com/perfectchaos/snakething.bmp it's bmp cause I made it with paint and was to lazy to use photo shop to make it a gif... but yeah, this is what I have for a monster, I didn't measure it with tiles, or really anything, just made it from scratch...I doubt you can use/finish this...
