Live chat

We use various services for online chatting. Our primary tool is IRC, which is also bridged to our official Discord server and Matrix space.

Internet Relay Chat - "IRC provides a way of communicating in real time with people from all over the world. It consists of various separate networks (or "nets") of IRC servers, machines that allow users to connect to IRC. IRC is very similar to text messaging, but designed around communicating with large groups of users instead of one on one."[1]

The Mana World has used IRC since the very beginning. We have had a presence on Platinum (private self-host), Freenode and most recently on Libera Chat. We recommend the Kiwi IRC client to connect to our channels, but you may use any client you like. As our original and most trusted communication service, we employ IRC as our primary tool of communication alongside the official forums. We aim to always keep this service available and staffed by moderators.

Our public channels on the Libera.Chat network are:

  • #themanaworld
  • #themanaworld-dev (for developers and development discussions)
  • #themanaworld-irc (for an unbridged IRC channel that is not visible to Discord or any third-party service other than Libera)

Discord is a voice, video and text communication service. Our Discord server is a very popular place to chat and its most popular channels are bridged to IRC and Matrix. Moderation staff is regularly present.

Discord is proprietary software.

Matrix

Matrix is an open source project that publishes the Matrix open standard for secure, decentralised, real-time communication, and its Apache licensed reference implementations. Matrix is really a decentralised conversation store rather than a messaging protocol. When you send a message in Matrix, it is replicated over all the servers whose users are participating in a given conversation - similarly to how commits are replicated between Git repositories.[2]
