Relocation of the Mana World Services - March 9th 2013

I'm posting this on behalf of the administrators, game masters and senior developers of themanaworld:
GHP wrote:As of March 9, 2013, The Mana World is changing to a different host. As a result, the game, forums, and wiki will be unavailable from 16:00 UTC. The IRC server and neglected Mantis Bug Tracker will be discontinued, in favor of our recovered channels on FreeNode and github issues, respectively.
During the downtime (which ideally would be about an hour, but could be worse), communication will still be available on irc://chat.freenode.net/#themanaworld. Please have patience. We'll do our best. Asking when the server will be up again won't make it faster :)

We, the senior Developers and GMs of TMW, have chosen unanimously, and after deep consideration, to leave our current host (Platinum) and provider (Platyna). We believe this will provide a better gaming experience.
Our new host will provide:
  • A virtual machine (good for portability in case we ever need to move again).
  • A linux distribution that is more familiar to game admins.
  • An active system administrator, and sufficient assurances in case he ceases to be active with TMW.
  • A deliberate separation between owning the host machine and making the rules. We'll publically post our rules for the distribution of power later.
Last but not least we all want to thank Platyna for the years she hosted this server and the time she invested. We wish her all the best in her life and studies.

Drama! Well, thanks Platyna for hosting TMW the last 8 years! It was far better than Ultramichys server or Elvens homecomputer ;)

And be aware of the known bugs: http://forums.themanaworld.org/viewtopi ... 13&t=17068

And if you *do* manage to crash one of the two servers ... please don't immediately go and crash the other one by doing the same thing. Someone did this the other day by typo'ing a GM command.

Thank you so very much Platyna for hosting all this time! You're awesome! :)

Will the server's info in game client need to be updated to a new server or will we be keeping same resolve(server.themanaworld.org)?

That's the DNS setting, which will change (though it may take some time to propagate).

You might want to publish the IP of the new server or an alternative hostname you set up earlier so that those whose nameservers still need time to synchronize can play earlier.

Platyna,
Thank you for hosting The Mana World, your time and money that went to it.
From, Questy

Edit:
Even though we do not really know each other, I feel bad that there is controversy over the relocation. I discovered TMW while it was hosted by you and it is one of my favorite things on the internet. It has made me (and by extension you and all The Mana World contributors) interested in free and open source issues.

I've discovered an unknown corruption in today's SQL snapshot. Wednesday's backup is fine. I will try hard to get and transfer an uncorrupted version, but in the worst case the forums/wiki will be rolled back 3 days.

Game data is not affected.

Edit: took another snapshot, and it doesn't seem corrupted.

Thank you Platyna, for the years hosting!

Because of you, I have meet great people and thoroughly enjoyed the gaming experience!
This is not good bye, but it is a move on. May your studies go well and your life bring your dreams!

Although we never talked, I walk away from this glad our paths crossed.

Thank you Platyna for your great contribution to this project!

And as you said yourself not long ago:
Platyna wrote:[...][this game] is another piece of OSS that proves the people from all over the world can work toghether, have fun, and ignore big evil corporations that wants to over control over everything including our entertainment. We are from many countries, we have different personalites, some of us are strict, some are ironic, some like to cause fuss - but we have to learn to work toghether.

I am leaving this for you to consider.

Regards.
