I'm really happy and exited about these news!
A friend of mine did some research about Steam and free (as in freedom) games on Steam. And this is what he got:

About Xonotic (a FPS game) and Steam
http://xonotic.org/posts/2013/about-xonotic-and-steam/

Open game art discussion
http://opengameart.org/forumtopic/steam-greenlight

Steamworks site
https://partner.steamgames.com/

My conclusions:
- Steamworks license is not compatible with GPL
- Is ok to publish a GPL game on Steam
- It is not ok to integrate a Steamworks into a GPL game
- Even without Steamworks, being on Steam has a lot of benefits

What exactly does it mean that TMW got approved for Steam? Does this mean that everybody will now have to download/install and set up an account for Steam in order to continue to play TMW?

It means it's an alternative route to finding and downloading our game.

Downloading will remain the same for those that use repos or source.

And in the end, Other than getting approved and the Greenlight, we can go no further with Steam. The agreement one has to sign with Steam does in fact breaks the GPL & CC licensing. Maybe some day in the future Steam will correct it's agreement to be more friendly to Open Source games. Thus TMW will not be able to be purchased or played via Steam.

So it's still not on steam right? Couldn't find it on steam's store search results at least.

It's maybe a little bit off topic, but why not publish manaplus on other store like GOG which looks like more friendly with OSS ? I see there is warsow on the store for example(which is not full OSS, but at least the engine is GPLv2).
And again sorry if I am off topic.

CC-BY-SA 3.0 and GPL3 works must not be made part of a Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) platform.
Even if they could, it is still wrong to support software designed to abuse its users.

If add some exception to GPL it can be published in Steam, but here too many authors for accept this exceptions.
In GOG exists free or almost free publication?

On GOG, there is no content with DRM, I found warsow on the store (the engine is GPLv2, and the data is Warsow license which is proprietary I guess). I send a mail to know if it was possible to publish OSS game, plus some recomendation for game, here is the answer:
Hello,
I'm afraid that I can't comment on any upcoming deals and releases (or lack thereof). I can only assure you that we're doing everything possible to get our hands on the best content possible.

Unfortunately the process can be very complicated. There are many variables to take into account when trying to secure distribution rights from a publisher or developer, and it's not always possible to come to a compromise that satisfies all . This is especially true for GOG, as we want to uphold our core values (like no copy protection, or fair pricing), which do not always fit well into how the industry generally works. It gets even more complex with old content, esepecially games, whose rights are often in a state of “legal limbo”.

Check out this Q/A video, featuring one of my superiors - Marcin Iwinski, for a first-hand view of how it works:

Also, I strongly suggest checking out Community Wishlist - while this won't make us get rights for these titles all of a sudden, every vote counts! :)

Finally, please stay tuned and check out our news page every week for new release info.
