[PUBLISHED VOTE] Should username "TheManaWorld" be allowed for users?

EDIT 25/01/19: This topic has been published at the end of internal voting and discussion, to discuss this further please open a thread in Player Talk.

When someone is nicknamed TheManaWorld and talks like he's part of the team pretending to speak for the project, people might get the wrong impression. I'd like to ask the user to change their username to something else, but this is a new one so we should vote on what happens.

This is what ranks and group colours are supposed to be for?

I remember a similar brief discussion back when 4144 first showed up (41 44 4d 49 4e are the ascii characters for ADMIN) and I don't think anyone cares; in that case it eventually turned out to be oddly prophetic, perhaps "TheManaWorld" might turn out to be similarly helpful, too

I think group colours and ranks do help, but when it's the exact name of the project it can be confusing. It can look like a special user ran by admins, kinda like the CRC character before it even had commands access and was a simple user but it was ran by the guild Captains and spoke for the guild. It's not a huge problem, but neither is changing someone's username after all.

The ascii for admin thing is much less straight forward. If TheManaWorld wants to change to something like " 01010100 01101000 01100101 01001101 01100001 01101110 01100001 01010111 01101111 01110010 01101100 01100100 " I would consider it if not for the character limit

I don't think names like 'TheManaWorld' should be allowed. If it was 'TheManaWorldPlayer', or something similar I don't think I would mind. I also don't mind 'references' such as 4144, or o11c. But having exactly the same username as the project is just confusing. Also not everyone pays attention to a username color.

I should have mentioned this before: I'll publish this thread to News once the poll closes. I think it's the best way even in future polls to prove to people that we do vote on things and this isn't a dictatorship. Just remember that when commenting on polls, it may not stay private. In this case I'll be able to link and reference this poll to the user if and when I contact them about a name change.

Blame majority rule :P

Hi there,
I have not really a strong opinion about that, so I wont vote right now, just wondering how much this could become a complicated issue.
Probably when you dont allow TheManaWorld, there will pop up things like !TheManaWorld, The-Mana-World, TMW-Master, The-Manaworldian, ManaWorldKing, The.Mana.World or whatever hundreds of nicks you can imagine - how could this be handled? Where to set proper limits to what is allowed and what is not?

I guess we have to decide each time when something like this comes up, which in my opinion is not a problem. It's not everyday that someone wants to use a nickname like 'TheManaWorld'. Since there are so many variations and possibilities, and some nicknames are less confusing than others, I think debating when it comes up is the best way.

Just for reference, I personally would be oke with these nicknames: TMW-Master, The-Manaworldian, ManaWorldKing

Though I can imagine other people may decide otherwise, especially with the 'TMW-Master' one, as it may be confused with a game master, which is why I think debating it is the best option.

I'm thinking the same here, if we start blocking this... Will we have to block all the others? I wonder what other games do with this topic, does WoW allow characters named "WorldOfWarcraft"? And follow what's the industry standard. Also I think that defining a concrete criteria about this would protect us from accusations of being "biased". (And even tho, the nickname is not illegal right now, maybe we should encourage the player to change it, so he isn't affected by any later limitatiion.

Other games don't allow names that could be confused for official spokespeople of that game. For example, WoW won't allow anyone to use "GM" in their name AFAIK. We do this as well, it's part of our rule against impersonating a GM, Dev or Admin. The question was wether the name of the game, in the form of its exact spelling, applies to this.

The vote has passed, so I will apply this rule to the following names (not case sensitive):
  • The Mana World
  • TheManaWorld
I think it's a fair interpretation and not too restrictive, if someone wants to be TehM4n4W0rlD or anything like that they can do so.
