Wiki & website improvement

Post by wushin »

The website was recently updated to shorten the load time of the main page & make the side links a bit more concise as to what they mean.
The wiki has had the theme improved to be usable on mobile as well as desktop. It should look the same on both. As having the wiki open on a tablet makes looking for a "Quest/item/drop/mob/map/instructions/etc." easier.

The wiki css is completely done inside our wiki.
https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php ... Common.css
anyone with edit permissions can edit the file. If something gets messed up it can get reverted like any other file. Hopefully in the future we can get a prettier theme as Cassy already said she might want to rearrange the furniture and paint the walls.

In order to reduce the errors for account creation. I've made a php class to connect to login server. The old method used a unreliable bash script and a database table.

https://github.com/themanaworld/themana ... ite/pull/7

This also paves the way for Single Username, So people can have forums<->wiki<->game accounts linked for "prestige". It should allow us to also set-up a password reset, IF and ONLY IF you registered with a valid email. I know some didn't register with a valid email so I'm looking at being able to change email, rename account, change password, bind an account to wiki/forum account & etc.

It's now way easier to like and share The Mana World with your friends. New addthis button so you can share posts, wiki and webpages with your friends.

Why not improve the in-game experience too?
Warriors are sh*t compared to archers, and mages are way too strong.
Give items like the Warlord Helmet special bonuses like the Bull Helmet and make them only for melee players, this would make warriors a little more strong and maybe make them get double exp just to get as much exp as the other builds.

Is there a way to switch it off? I find it very annoying, especially the way it slides out as an animation after the page has loaded.

the share buttons are the only thing they are complaining about. It doesn't do ads nor do I have any plans to have advertisements on the site.

I shouldn't have to use an adblock service just to fix an annoying website design. There are probably half a dozen sites I do that for already, please let's not have TMW be one of them.

Its a quick fix, if we had more resources we could add more permanent buttons. I will remind everyone TMW is a mmorpg and therefore highly social. People so far have enjoyed sharing links and its brought us more players traffic. It strengthens and shares the community. The addthis works nicely with tag manger and I didn't have to edit any site code to add it. I'll agree it could be better, but once again pragmatism will win the day. Its no more annoying then any other site with social.

I completely agree that an add blocker should not be necessary.

But I also agree that the social aspect and sharing is important for the growth of the game and is the best way to increase traffic. However, if enough of the current players are annoyed by this design feature, it would be worth re-thinking it (obviously within your time and resources). It's not a big deal, but it could be enough to disuade people from the site, which works contrary to what you are trying to achieve.

Ultimately, games are successful by maintaining loyal players, not merely by converting new players who may end up leaving. It's best to try and give the loyal players what they want to encourage them to stay.
