If you're going to use a telnet client, you'll need to emulate a real IRC client: http://oreilly.com/pub/h/1963.

Freenode?

I just installed XChat and joined the dev channel - these are my first steps in irc, never chatted using this before, so I decided to first read the instructions and informations.
I chose Freenode and it told me to register my nick, so I red the attached link and also the information about freenode that are provided when clicking on the name on top of the tree.

There can the adress hubbard.freenode.net be found. That made me suspicious and I went on reading.
They also state some words about Hubbard, the founder of Scientology and even Dianetics.

???????

What has freenode to do with that? Are there any connections between Scientology and Freenode? Why else would anyone want to tell the users about Hubbard? So I thought.

I now have another explanation: I researched a bit and googled the Carnegie Mellon University and found Dave Touretzky's page who seems to be a critic on Scientology and also happens to be research Prof in the Computer Science Departement. So the hubbard.xxx.. could just be some sort of parody.

My, I must sound THAT paranoid, but I just was so shocked to find anything scientology related in my happy-non-profit world of Open Source.

Has anyone further information about that?

And another question concerning registration of my nick: when I go on the help page, it says
# Register your IRC nick:

/msg nickserv register <your-password> <your-email>

# To keep your email address private, rather than displaying it publicly, mark it as hidden:

/msg nickserv set hidemail on
Do I have to type that into the chat window? Or anywhere else?

The /msg command sends a private message to another user on the IRC network, in this case nickserv, the nickname management bot. You can enter this in any channel window.

Mibbit users be aware that Freenode has had to ban the use of the Mibbit web client due to abuse...

As of today we have disabled access to the freenode irc network via mibbit. While there are numerous reasons for this, it ultimately comes down to the ability to prevent abuse via this client. We allow connections from many types of web gateways, and such connections require a certain amount of trust and communication between the server operators and the gateway operators. While we have tried to maintain a good working relationship with anyone who wishes to provide access to freenode and are lucky that most of our users and projects are very friendly and communicative, we have found it difficult to maintain open communications with mibbit. This has resulted in a large amount of staff time being spent on managing abuse coming from mibbit, disrupting service for other mibbit users and reducing the quality of the network. Sadly, we feel that this is ultimately not beneficial to mibbit users or the network as a whole.

We appologize to those who used mibbit for the inconvenience this has caused, and for the need to find a new client or method to connect to freenode.

In response to this, we have implemented our own web gateway at http://webchat.freenode.net. The webchat runs qwebirc package which was developed for and extensively used by quakenet. We’d like to extend our thanks to slug and the rest of the team for making it available.

Our new webchat facility also makes it easy to add to your own site. To do this, just click on the menu icon on the top left corner where you will find an “add webchat to your site” option. You will be taken through an easy wizard to get this going and get the webchat on your very own site!
Long story short... if you're a web client user...

http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=t ... %2Ctmw-dev

That should get you to the most common channels (and no nerdy flames about "just use xchat client or abc chat client" )

hrm... pidgin doesn't seem to be listed there

http://pidgin.im
  • Pidgin is free and available for most platforms and also as source code.
Pidgin works well for irc as well as most other IM protocols on the planet.
Pidgin also has a translation plugin that works with google translate to help those users for whom english is not the primary language.

2. Choose your favourite nick
3. Select FREENODE from 'IRC Network'

That's how IRC works: You join a channel, write your question and do something else until someone responds. Most IRC clients notify you when someone says your nickname (called "highlighting"). Then you chat with the person. When you need the attention of a specific person you can highlight this person yourself by writing its nickname.
