Player-set

Post by stava »

This is topic where I'll work on player-set. To do list (and what's done for now):

Stand
Walk - Done
Sit - Done
Dead - Done
Run (necessary?)

Dagger attack - Done
One hand swing attack with shield potential
Two hand swing attack
Attack animation for weapons which have a long stick in them

Bow - Done
Crossbow/gun (necessary?)

Prepare magic
Cast magic (1 frame?)
I didn't make any of those that are marked as done (for now).

Also Two Hand Attack #2

These sprites are still being worked on.

Anyone against #2 2-frame animation and why? Especially if you glide the sprite a bit forward via XML magic and use a motion trail on the actual weapon animation, it should prove to be a good one.

If no one objects, it should be safe to progress doing the side view for it.

There are transparent pixels in the player sprites. Please edit them with a graphic manipulation program which can handle transparency or you are damaging them.
  • former Manasource Programmer
  • former TMW Pixel artist
  • NOT a game master

Please do not send me any inquiries regarding player accounts on TMW.

You might have heard a certain rumor about me. This rumor is completely false. You might also have heard the other rumor about me. This rumor is 100% accurate.

Not really paying attention to such things atm xD
Trying to make the movements I'll fix that stuff later when I shade it and all.
Could you tell me your favorite of them? I'd like to get votes from admins on this game..

just a little tidbit.... if you alternated #2 2 frame so he swung left then right it'd add a little variance that could look pleasing

That is great. That is wonderful. Those efforts may very well lead to the end of the playerset bottleneck. I'm thrilled.

Now, on the technical side of things, I hope you are working with a project file or at least have been saving the individual frames in a lossless format, because these sample-merged GIF animations don't provide a good base to work on without hours of repair jobs. This makes it difficult for others to pitch in. Don't get me wrong, GIF is our friend when conducting previews.

Here is what I'm trying to describe:

This takes a while to sort out. I doubt that it is your sole resource. It looks like you are simply doing a rapid prototyping phase. This is good, but please don't lose your progress.

As for programs that support layering and 32 bit color (a full alpha channel) I use the GIMP. You may also like Paint.NET which is free also, but you'll have to download a bunch of MS libraries, or install mono to use it. I'd go with a compiled program like GIMP that doesn't depend on slow interpreters. Fother uses Photoshop, GIMP opens .psd documents. Photoshop is overpriced and torrentz of it are trouble.

This image shows the layering process and how the alpha channel helps get a lot more done:

Don't worry about the outlining and stuff, it'll all be perfect once it's finished.
I was just making the movements so we decide which movement looks best, from what side should he hit, how many sprites could we use..
I also tried to make it easy for doing equipment (As Rotonen suggested)
Those pics are gif because they are animated, there are png pics at posts before.

Instead of explaining what I should do, could you please tell me whats your favorite attack move?
And sorry, I'm sticking to MS paint. I really can't wait 10 mins for Gimp to open every time I wanna pixel something, and getting used to a whole new program is quite hard, yet the outcome isn't much better.
MS paint is program I choose because it's simple, easy. I can do exact same shading technique that you need, on MS paint.

And again, please vote for your favorite moves, so I can finish them from all sides, and color them, fix outlining..

Equipment has to be drawn for each frame of each animation of the playerset, so the 2-frame version of the 2 handed attack makes life a lot easier. As Rotonen has voted on. I think there might be a problem doing the motion blurs of weapons with only 2 frames. It might turn out to be a 3 frame animation with the second frame copied in order to do a motion blur. I don't know atm, and it's better to get this out of the way first.

I think this one is best, most realistic xD

Image Two hand swing side view.

Image Two hand swing back view.

Image This would be add to spell casting, 3 sprites instead 1. xD
Image Spell casting 2 sprites (One with raised hands is preparing to cast and one with hands like praying is casting)

Image Added another frame to 1 handed sword and shield swing

Image Sword and shield swing side view

Image Pole arm swing
