While the numbers of players indeed went down a bit, it is not as dramatic as you state it to be.

The main reason for the player density in level areas to go down is that we have much more level areas by now. When we added the botcheck area the main leveling place was the bat cave. Now we also have the hurnscald mines, the graveyard, the terranite cave and a ton of other maps where players go to level. This dilutes the number of players over a lot more maps. It also gives the high level players more to do than just sitting in hurnscald and chatting so that it is less populated now.

The stats per month might be a bit more meaningful:
http://themanaworld.de/stats/online_pla ... what=years

According to those stats the player numbers went down by about 40% between August '09 and September '10.

Note that the online statistics didn't seem to work properly between April 10 and March 17, so the apparent down in April and March is misleading.

The decline of player numbers seems to be a steady process unrelated to any specific event.

That is why I provided the stats by months. Online statistics work only properly when eAthena provides the online file correctly, which is not always the case :)

edit: that reminds me to include the pre-2009 statistic data sometimes.

Split this discussing from this thread in Player Talk where it was in danger of getting derailed by personal fighting:
