Very nice demonstration, Crush. I think it's also interesting that the stalagmite that looks best in the cave looks like crap (in both senses of the word) on its own. Drawing new stuff is indeed best done in the target context.

i personally don't like cave's color scheme... to me it looks more like a dry brown soil than a moist stone or solid rock... from which the cave usually is.

You won't change the color scheme by creating graphics that don't fit into it.

Why don't you take the cave tileset and experiment with changing the colors? Maybe something usable will come out of it. Like the ice cave we got that way. Or how about making your own tileset from scratch?

A new cave tileset may not be the best thing to start working on, at least not without taking into account the new cave set that Modanung has been working on for our unfinished Dark Sunday side-project.

I would say the soil and walls of the cave set linked above are of similar structure as our current cave set, so maybe it's still not in line with your opinion of what it should look like. Feel free to show an example.

That cave tileset by Modanung looks nice, but I think it just isn't our style.

It sure beats the caveset we are using now.

Which is, btw, made by Modanung. And matches our "style" even worse then the new very good looking cave tileset by our new swedish overlord Modanung :)

Actually the current cave tileset was made by me, except for the sand tile. :-)

Anyway I agree the new cave tileset doesn't match our style, and it wasn't primarily meant for TMW so this isn't surprising. But it can be adapted of course.

What I like with the new cave is the that it doesn't look as flat as the one we have now.
swedish overlord Modanung
Swedish? What? I'm the only swedish overlord.

Uhm yea... so that tileset wasn't meant for TMW. The tiles are too big and not square. That may be overcome by some rearanging. Maybe changing the colours a bit would bring it a lot close to TMW style-compatible.

plain skull with horns:

it was supposed to be a skull helmet... maybe there can be some use of it..

Image

(impaled on the stick, like some sort of warning sign..i know it's a cliche :) or it can hang on the wall like trophy or so...)

I would picture that flagpole with the skull on it in a wasteland surrounded by other marks of battle. Just with less bright colors.
