hi

I made a tmw footage movie today (640x480 16MB):
Google-Video: http://video.google.de/videoplay?docid= ... 3330770399 (published as not ranked because its not final)
Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/2016835/tmw ... b.avi.html

I used an old Version of Fraps (0.9) because it allows to capture without watermark... Unfortunately I had to disable the new overlay because that effect wasn't centred in the caves (had to set TMW to 640x480 to capture it at once).

suggestions? feedback?

IRC-Feedback by bjorn:
<b_lindeijer> Overall nice, but rather incoherent set of recordings.
<b_lindeijer> I really liked the part where you zoomed in to show the visible equipments.
<b_lindeijer> Two things of note, I think you should turn on effect layers (especially for showing the cloud shadows), and not wear equipment for which we have no player visibility yet (like the pullover on the end).
<b_lindeijer> In general it would be nice if there were more other players visible.
how can I solve the player problem? ;) just capturing other players fighting?

ambient overlay: i believe resizing the png should solve that problem

show more visible equipment: EDIT: finished, see my avatar :)

"incoherent set of recordings" problem: hmm thats difficult because tmw grows a lot :). Splitting the video to many small specialised videos (desert, woodland, "dungeon", fighting, npcs, equipment) might be a solution?

good night :)[/b]

I created the group "The Mana World" on youtube to collect all tmw videos posted on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/group/themanaworld

The group is public, so everyone can join and add videos.

With incoherent I was mainly referring to the large amount of jumps that are present in the video. Like jumping from walking left to towards the palm trees to being among the palm trees walking to the right. Or opening a buy dialog in the bar and suddenly ending up in the casino. It would be nicer if there were longer "coherent" sequences and less random jumping around.

I made a new movie, today... and I believe its a final version.

Everything is new except 1-2 scenes :) The scenes are now longer and nearly without jumps. I often had to recapture scenes to really get what I want to show (I used 700 arrows to get the bow-animation captured for example...). The mouse cursor is hidden all the time (config.xml -> customcursor = 0). Buying/Selling/Gambling dialog is completely visible but without mouse cursor... One thing is missing... seeing other players fighting, walking...

the only suggestion i have would be to put titles for each part, such as: "Clothes", or "Shops", or "Weapons". This will allow the viewer to focus on what you are intending.

Nicy, but the shop scenes should be nicer with latest svn (0.0 branch)

thanks,

sure, its free to use and modify for everyone. It was thought to be an advertisement for tmw, so every type of sharing helps the game. :)

new buy dialog & titles -> next movie... ;)

btw: i said two topics ahead that I was using "Fraps 0.9" to capture the videos. Thats wrong, the correct version number is "1.9D" ;)

I found also taksi around (taksi.sf.net) which should be free of watermarks and should work for SDL+OpenGL applications.

That actually puts us in somewhat good light. Nice!

Peacemaker, would you mind doing a promotional film like that for every release? (As in 0.0.x releases, 0.0.x.y releases are not really necessary since they're mostly bugfixes, but the event related releases should be also made into movies.)

They should become more and more attractive if our composing department would finally be more active at some point. At least the next release should bring our soundscape to a whole new level. We could even have audio commentary from the dev team in those films occasionally. What do you think?

a promotion video for every 0.0.x release sounds a little bit much? Sure, if enough (visible stuff like new maps, tiles) got changed and I have spare time (I'm currently a fulltime student) we can talk about that :). and of course every (big) event should get an own movie.

An audio commentary sounds good for me :)

about taksi: it works with tmw but has no sound capturing at all (like Fraps1.9D). The great thing about taksi is that it allows to select a different codec. Unfortunately my computer is 5+ years old so i cant use that feature which means nearly uncompressed / lossless video data ;).

sound recording: not yet tested... If my computer can bear video&audio recording (tmw + video tool + audio tool) at once i can put the streams together afterwards.

about an intro: we need something special at the beginning of every movie. the intro should be animated. If someone is common to flash (is there an opensource alternative?) feel free to animate something. why using Flash? it allows to export the animation to .avi :)

Titles: our titles should have a designed border like in the Wesnoth Trailer ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIt69vznegs ). But its better to make it static because its easier to put an transparent png into the movie instead of an other blueboxed movie.

You should add at the end "Directed by: Alan Smithee" :P

BTW, please stay away from flash. The plugin gives a lot of problems with video on many Linux configurations (mainly video/audio sync and streaming issues).

Please read again what Peacemaker said, I think you misunderstood him.

Sure, just a video to highlight any major changes or additions, nothing more. I wasn't really clear on what I actually wanted.
