This is extremely complicated, especially given that with those penalties no one will want to equip the wrong items anyway, making them unequippable would be a lot easier. Everything you add is something more for the players to understand, when you can avoid making something too complicated, you should.

Just because I'm bad at explaining doesn't make this system complicated.
It's far from that even.
The way you're reacting it seems like our audiance is a pack of brain dead monkeys.
The system is fairly simple, and even double so for the end user who doesn't need to concern itself of the how-to
