[DIS] Tools of trade - useful software

Post by i »

Actually I'm looking for GIMP plugin (or other software) which allows to live preview of tiles. While I'm drawing tile 32x32px it would be nice to have one window with live preview 3x3 tiles (96x96px). It could make our work much easier.

However I couldn't find anything like this, but I found something else. I think it could be useful GIMP plug-in.

http://www.trueelena.org/proj/scripts/tile_layers.php
This plug-in converts image layers to sprite sheet.

If you got some useful tools / links / software / plug-ins be sure to post them here.
to moderators: I'd like to make this topic "sticky" if it is possible.

You want a preview type of thing for the GIMP? Kinda like this?
Image
(see bottom left)

If that's what you want, you don't need a plug-in.
To get that small preview screen, in your image go to View > New View.
Then on the screen that pops up, disable the scrollbars, rulers, status bars, and menu bars. (you can disable those in the that new views, view menu button. But be sure to disable the menu bars last, or else you won't be able to disable the other things w/o hitting a hotkey I don't remember ;)
You can resize that new view, (which is a live view of your image you are working on), and scale it to fit however you want it.

If that's totally not what your talking about, sorry for wasting your time. :P

Or if it is for creating tilable tile, one can follow this tutorial:

http://www.geocities.com/gauravnawani/t ... -gimp.html

But there is a typo. The keyboard shortcut for layer offest is Shift-Ctrl-O, not Ctrol-O.

With all respect, I can use gimp. And that's not the effect I wanted to reach. I NEED PREVIEW in 100% WITH NINE (9) COPIES OF IMAGE PLACED ON GRID

Yes, I, I've been trying to do that for a while now, but no success, instead I finished creating .gif files and is kind of frustrating...

Which is why layer offset is useful. It eliminates the need to have "9 copies of the image placed on grid" in order to make sure it is tilable.

It is however useless for animating sprites :P

I am unfamailar with GIMP scripting, but I am sure it is very possible and not difficult to create one which make 9 copies of an image and placed them on grid.

There is an apparent need for this. Would the tech devs mind reacting to this?

I am not sure if it is possible to create a live preview, however there is a default filter in GIMP that will tile an image for you.

I know that, but I repeat once again, I need live preview.

How about asking the gimp gurus at the gimptalk.com forum if they know how to do this?

Tried it out, it does a live preview at 100% of any tile you make. This is even linked on the corpse thread Rotonen just gave.

I also tried out tile studio a while ago. It got a lot of interesting features for creating pixel art tiles (the function which creates a noise pattern with a fixed color palette is very useful for creating passable oldschool tiles in a very short time) but lacks a lot of advanced features of GIMP.

So can anyone solve this problem of ours? I see 2 options:

1) Develop something inhouse. (This would fall on our tech devs.)
2) Externalize the problem. (Bug the GIMP development mailing lists or some similar resource.)

In any case we need someone to take responsibility for the realization or it will not happen.
