How about this? I think you are right, it does look good.

The ice icon is good in my opinion, the metal icon does still not convince me.

Ice is looking leagues better, but I wonder if it still suffers from a bit of contrast-deficiency. The outline is fine in the top-left, but as you move toward the bottom-right, it begins to blend with the background. I'm not sure if this was the intended effect, but something is telling me that the snowflake still needs to stand out a bit more. I'm probably over analyzing it.

Your ingot looks great (might look even better as gold on silver) but for some weird reason, I found the idea of a simple cube interesting. (probably because I'm simple-minded and easily captivated  :D )

The problem is that most of us don't see many ingots in our lives, or at least, don't see them enough to really attach that shape to the word. So we don't recognize the shape as metal.. I'm starting to think that is not a big deal.

At some point in the game, this symbol is going to have the word "Metal" sitting next to it. Also, if we're going to have ingots as items in the game, it seems like a good opportunity to get away with something so seemingly cryptic.

About not recognizing it as metal, you're all right. ..but for now (until something more appropriate presents itself) I am voting for a cube with the texture of the new ingot.

Hey!

Here is the cube as requested :) I modified the ice crystal with less effect. I like the ingot a bit more than the plain cube, but it can go anyway for me.

Othello,

Both the ingot and the cube work for me. I find that the ingot has stronger connotations to metal for me personally, though the cube is more symmetric, which seems more appropriate for magic... so it's a tough call. As for snow, have you considered making the background a light or cyan-ish shade of blue?

Thank you for your hard work and patience with us, by the way :-)

The ice version is much better! :D

But for the metal, I think I prefer the ingot. For me it says "metal" way more than the cube. Honestly though, I think it's not that big of deal, there will always be people who picture metal as something different. Some people see metal as a raw form, others see metal as a processed form, and others see it in yet another way.

The icons look great, and good job, and thank you for your fantastic work Othello

Overview of all graphics posted so far:

fire:Image Image
water: Image
earth: (none yet)
air: Image Image Image Image Image
lightning:ImageImage
ice: Image Image Image
metal: Image Image Image Image Image Image
nature:Image Image
healing: (none yet)

Note that it is not only important how each one looks for itself but also how they look together. Pay special attention to the color selection. It should be equally balanced through the complete color spectrum, in my opinion.

Thanks crush for putting them together. Note that I will all style them at the end to fit together more. When drawing lots of images there is also some progress in your style. I will modify the first ones accordingly. Also will I give each icon the background color choosen for that magic discipline.

Hey Othello,

could you please try another color composition for the ice icon? White background and blue(ish) snowflake? =)

Othello, you are using inkscape, right?

Maybe you could also provide the SVG files. That way others can experiment with your graphics, too.

This is part of my whole Female dog, wolf, fox or otter about trying to find a good place to use yellow.

Well put. Thanks for putting our picky criticism to constructive use.

Also pointed out by fate, I think the symmetry of the cube is more important than the picturesque quality of the bar. The bar could be used as an item icon. (without the background, of course)

I LOVE the new ice.

Something that I've wondered from the beginning; how do all of these look without the glare effect in the top left? (I'm assuming it's the same image layered over every icon..)

I like the ingot bar better the metal cube. the Cube looks more like a ice cube then any representation of metal. But thats just my opinion. :)

Here is the icon for healing. I'm not sure about the flare, but a polgon flare wasn't that good either.

Dave: Yes, all images have 3 layer (background, image, and shading (foreground)). I will release the SVGs when done. I might remove or change the glare when done.

Black Don: Yes its a bit ice-cuby huh :) Maybe I should use the same colors for each side.

Crush: I will release all the images as SVGs when I've completed the lot.

Btw, there was no color selected for healing, so I used black. Somehow seems to contradict healing, but it worked well with the flare effect :D. We might want to use orange or pink for healing, though personally I would use white (or purply-white, like the flare).

I think white would be the best color for healing. Black doesn't fit at all.
