As for the attack animation, just dumbly ramming into the player could be an option:

We would also need some smaller ones for the normal maggots. Like Maggot turns into a fly. Giant maggot turns into giant fly. Just my 2 cents

Not familiar with how maggots work.. but wouldn't it just be:

Maggot -> Giant Maggot -> Giant Fly?

I already explained a few times why self-reproducing monsters are a bad idea: They lead to exponential growth of the monster population when no player is on the map.
