I always think that people who complain about tiled are moved by laziness since tiled can create complete maps and by complete I mean that they have all the features tmw can show. What most of the people are asking for is a set of tools to speed up the mapping process, and about that remember tiled as well as tmw are under highly development, they're not in their final version, so you just have to wait and give suggestion to improve them. I made most of the maps in tmw and my complain is only that it requires a lot of time which i don't have since I have to work on a lot of other things as well for tmw: scripts/items/database/client and server development/and many many others. I think that a dedicated mapper could have enough time to create a nice big map (as Crush did) or small maps (just think at the inn/casino) and free the developers from this task so that they could concentrate on the development of the client/server so that you will see the features you ask sooner. About developing our own map editor, that's not worth it because we already have a working editor I can't see why we should start again from the beginning slowing things down even more.
Of course this is only my opinion.

Say what you want, but an inexclusive external editor is very unprofessional any way you think about it.

I agree with ElvenProgrammer that doing our own editor is a waste of time, though I think this only goes for a stand alone one. I think ultimately a mapper should be able to log in and edit maps directly from the game client, removing any obstacles the mapper may be facing to make a small fix somewhere. This brings with it a host of synchronisation problems of course and quite a bit of GUI programming, so it'll take a while before we can implement this.
