world-shift spell clobbers player's choice of soul menhir

Post by radiant »

When you world-shift (#alonzialonzo) from anywhere other than map 28, it sends you there and sets your designated respawn point there as well, to keep up that "If you die in map 28, you die in REAL LIFE!...er, well at least you don't leave the map, that's for sure!" charade. The problem is, it doesn't make note of your previous respawn anywhere, so that after world-shifting back you get dropped specifically on 009-1, and your respawn is set on that map as well, even if you had touched a soul menhir in one of the other towns beforehand.

With map 28 not serving much of a purpose these days, and world-shift more useful for "use it twice to warp from anywhere to Hurnscald in 30 seconds flat" than anything, it seems like this is currently an oversight. Since the focus now seems to be on expanding out the other areas, at least being able to change "Hurnscald" above to "your designated home base" has merit.

In story terms, the catalyst used in world-shift (the dark petal) is associated with Hurnscald and in the world of 028-*, hence having world-shift associated with any other area would require a new backstory.

In gameplay terms, this was a one time reward for people that had sufficiently completed the temporary quest at the time, and as such would not be made available again, so making it an `all-purpose spell of awesome' would make life harder for newer (read: post easter 2010) players, or those that did not sufficiently complete the quest at the time.

Regarding the use of 028-*, there were sketchy plans to expand this area (by linking to it via teleportation NPCs) and gradually phasing out the spells' effectiveness in areas other than central Hurnscald once this was done so. However, it is now uncertain whether these plans will ever be acted upon.

Okay, so let the warp back stay at 9-1. But does it need to follow that up with a forceful activation of the soul menhir there (instead of recalling whatever the player's previous setting was)?

My thoughts are that since there's currently no free travel to Nivalis from anywhere, and no free departures except death or world-shift, I could set Niv as the home base and use 2xWS as desired to get to the mainland, saving a whopping...1500 GP per round trip. Woo-hoo, a nice little bonus for hanging onto the dark petal. But no, that's not even good for more than a single one-way ticket.

With a layover at that. And not even an in-flight bag of peanuts.

Unfortunately, all the peanuts were already used up in the making of the portal back. ;)
