Another solution:
Add more details to the walkable layer, like:
- walkable for players
- walkable for NPCs
- walkable for players & NPCs
- walkable for noone

In addition it would really be better when players can walk through other players.

i've startet to play qin lately (a commercial 2d mmorpg from the isometric perspective). they solve this problem by giving the players the ability to jump over each other (while making it impossible to jump over barriers the player is not supposed to jump over).

Then I will log in and ban them.
Suggestion of passage entrance solution:

i am by no means opposed to jumpin, but this adds a new dimension in the game that could lead to major bugs. if kept controlled, jumping might be the solution, but i kinda like the pushing idea. to make it less of something that could be an annoynce, you could make it so that you have to have +1 more than the person (maybe ppl) that u are trying to push. this makes it a little more democratic because you have to actually rally ppl to your cause.

If the game grows to where players can affect the environment by pushing boulders out of the way etc things might get wierd.

EDIT : More seriously wouldn't it be possible to do so that people who don't move for a while are disconnected ?

Or they become a ghost, so other plaers can walk through them. So see which players are idling, they could have a grey character sprite.

Great idea with the idle player changing to a ghost.I like that.

hmmm ghosts are good but with that there should be an option you can set to how long idle you have to be in order to turn "ghost"

A sleeping animation has been discused for when you are idle for so long. It would be nice to step over sleeping players.
