change screen reolution?

hey ppl, can anyone tell me how to change the screen resolution? i wanna lower it to 800x600 if it isnt already on that (if so, lower). when i go in game and try to click a different resolution, it doesnt do anything -- highlight or w/e.
so can anyone fill me in on this?
1. whats the default resolution?
2. how do i change it, if possible?
