I had the same problem.
I manually went in and extracted the files from the downloads into the correct folders and was able to see the maps. For some reason i was still not able to see the scythe. Unfortunately to do this on a Mac you have to make hidden files visible.
Not sure why the mac is having trouble opening the latest update.

Anyway you were able to extract the files form the update package, so this means the package is not corrupted. I'd blame the mac version of zlib or physfs. Maybe changing physfs from 1.0.0 to 1.0.1 or the contrary could help?

I wish I had even the slightest clue how to do this. Alas I am no programmer, especially on the mac.

I think the first one is not a bug but a feature (hiding under the table is quite neat).
