can't move?

Hello!
I have a small problem here: I can't move around on the map.
In the beginning, while creating the character, I got a message with "Unknown error". I then logged out and back in. The character magically was there. But when I selected it and started playing, all I could do was to turn around. The char wouldn't move. Also, the whole map consisted of desert, with only a few squares up in a straight line from the middle of the screen (where my character was standing) were different, but not making any sense, as if they were chunks of some bigger images thrown together at random.
Anybody any idea what to do with that?
I'm running debian, kernel 2.6.6, and the cvs version 0.0.8 of tmw.
