And the problem with that is some don't. You always need to take the some into account when writing something. Omitting people from a guide is a bad idea. Guichan is not backwards compatible, and will overwrite whatever is already installed on Ubuntu, thus causing other packages that use, say 0.7.1, to break.

That's why I prefer rolling release. Easier for everyone.
For example: I run Archlinux, which is rolling release. and then type "pacman -S tmw" on a terminal or vc and it'll get installing the lastest version on the repositories. Thanks to ABS (Arch Build System), you can make a simple PKGBUILD to compile the lastest version avaible and so, then install with pacman.
Ubuntu is too bloated for my likeness. Even if my Linux way started near there, it went to trash soon.

The problem in rolling release distributions lies in you having to constantly reconfigure stuff due to configuration file syntax changes.

Not really... maybe when a package update is a major one, but I doubt, I never had to touch anything, not even for the kernel. Just recompile it, and that's done during installation.
