Unable to connect to server

I just installed TMW and wanted to try it. But when I try to register an account it keeps giving me an error that it cannot connect to the remote server.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 and found in the Ubuntuforums some one that recommended installing the packages from Jaunty, so I did that, still no luck.
Any suggestions on to what I can do to get this to work?
