to "help" the auldsbel with his experiments for the transmutation magic school in one state he ask you for 100 silk cocoon

but when you colect them he take only 20 of them

Well... Auldsbel's line is:

"Auldsbel attempts to cram the cocoons into his pockets, with little success. Finally he gives up and takes them into his hut."

We can reasonably suppose that his sloppy attempt made him drop or leave most of them behind and "we" could pick them up again.
