Ali-G, the point of dithering is that you do NOT use additional color shades to archive the effect.

If you something colored in the middle, make it in shades of grey colors so that it can be dyable via the items.xml file.

I was thinking that maybe you could put different gems on it? (Sapphire, Amethyst,Topaz,Ruby,Diamond)

You don't have to create differently colored versions to do that. We have the technology to recolor parts of images at runtime. See http://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Image_dyeing for details.
