[FND] Dock

Post by Reid »

Let's keep it simple, I will add a lot of more details on it but here is how the dock tileset will look like. (Don't worry, it's just the ground work right now, I will add wooden/block pillars under it and crossed wood just behind the actual tiles to make it looks better)

Not much too comment about it yet. The texture breaks / doesn't 'flow' around the hole. (sorry about my broken english, hope you understand it, if it's too unclear, and you don't see it I can draw circles around it to show you what I mean :P)

I do have a few questions however though, cause I'm not sure that's cause of unfinished work, or you intended it to be :P

right now (on the testmap), you mapped the dock directly on the water. This would mean that by every wave the dock would get flooded. After you have drawed the pillars will you raise the dock? (so basically will you draw the pillars under water, or in the water?)

The stairs at the moment are made from stone, are you planning to also draw wooden stairs? (I think wood will look a lot better for the docks.)

Yep please use circle, I don't see where you see holes Oo or are you talking about those between every wooden part?

I badly mapped it yes, the dock will be 1 tile over the water, so it won't get flooded.
I don't understand your question about pillars, but I will try to do an example of those rather soon.

I wonder if wood would be better, bricks are present on most place of the city, I will use the default stair from hal9000 for now, if it's wrong, I will do a wooden one or else.

At first draw some lines to represent a wooden, repeat it to have two woodens.

Then repeat the same to have diagonal wooden supports.

Then draw the rest, wasn't it easy?

I've added some background woods, now I go work on the pillars.

Edit:
Should the background of these tiles be in iron or wood?

I added one more wooden on both sides and then added pillars on them, I also tried to tile a bit with them to see the limit, it will be more than enough for what we need.
(It's yet still a concept, it won't stay blue and magenta... >.>)

Edit: I corrected a missing wood-background on some tiles on the tileset, this version still have the bug.

Very nice job, as always! It looks finished to me, is there anything left to do?

Just a few remarks, maybe a matter of taste.
I'd prefer water in slightly more greenish tones.
I 'd see pillars diameter somewhat bigger such as in:
ImageImage
Also the part upper the deck merges into the deck. (Lack of contrast or shades? perhaps a higher color contrast between horizontal and vertical parts?)
Finally, a question: Do you plan to give a texture to water surface?
Image
Generally speaking I like it and find the color choices good.

Yep, 2-3 things to make it looks better with our actual tiles, and maybe some variations.

Water will remain as it until that we fix our water animation problems (which involve Len), and if I do the pillar bigger, I will need to change the way of how I've planned to add pillars on the wooden part, well, it complicate a bit everything. :P

Lack of contrast for the deck problem, I will work on it.

And no water texture, it has been discussed to add water waves, but it won't see the day as it requier too much works for something which could look bad. =/

The chains change everything, the problem with the pillars is fixed now IMO :D

I still think the pillars lack contrast. Can't you make them dark red brown? I think it would look a lot better.

Lol, I've changed them to a little more green-ish ton, because the dock on itself already use a red brown palette.
Are you sure about the colour choice? The green rendered well as this is the wood part who connect to the water, so who the wood part who is "rotten" or whatever.

No, im not sure about the color choice. I just think it lack's contrast at the moment. When I draw pixelart, I always like to play with the colors, cause I can only tell whether it looks good or bad after I have seen it. So basically I don't know if it's a good or bad choice, it might look a lot worser :P

When I think of dark red brown I think of this kind of wood:

Image

Its a completly different kind of wood than used on the dock. I understand the green part, and love how its applied to the stone wall. Maybe it can also be applied just like that on the dark red wood?
