Casino Coin and Gold Drops

Something has been bugging me. The "Casino Coin" looks like a bunch of gold, and should be used for a gold drop. I created another "Casino Coin" that might fit better seeing as when the Casino Coin drops, it only adds one to the inventory. The next step would be to use the current Casino Coin as gold drop, so when a monster dies it can drop gold as well.

Dont ream me too hard, this is my first pixel art piece. Suggestions?

EDIT: I updated the link to the picture. It is now pointing to my webserver instead of putfile.

A fine suggestion indeed.

Was gold ever considered as a drop when deciding the balance of things?

First of all... why would you show us your piece at a zoom level of 400%? Most people are only interested in how it looks at true size. Some artists who may be interested in it on pixel-scale can manage themselves. Second, why would you use jpg's for pixel art? As you can see the jpg format is very blurry and not suited for pixel-art. Use the png format instead, it's (near to) lossless and supports transparency. Also it's smaller.
Third... even on 100% it's one HUGE hell of a coin. It looks more like a manhole cover now. I think this is one of the reasons the casino coins are displayed as a pile of coins, because a single small coin would be hard to see. We like to keep things to scale at least a bit. You do have a point though.

Art-wise I don't have a lot to comment, it's a yellow cylinder without shading or anti-aliasing with the size of a manhole. :P

I think only human(oid) enemies should drop gold, btw. Like bandits, taxcollectors, beggars and ratpeople.

ya... um... not sure what happened to the scale... might have been something that happened when i uploaded it to putfile. I have it as a .png on my computer here (possibley another putfile thing), and i was trying to decide the size of it, but was unsure, so i looked at the wiki, and it said 32x32. Casino coins would be fine being larger than a gold coin, for a couple of reason.

1. they would not be confused as a gold coin for spending
2. making different casino coins (size, color) could add a dynamic to the casino

I was also unsure whether the coin needed to have lighting effect, etc., due to it being an item of its type (picked up).

At first: I think that coin is a bit too large, maybe try draw it a bit smaller
Second: If u draw some shadows and highlight could be nice
Third: Maybe some textures on coin surface?
Forth: If u will make one, and that one will be good enough, u will need make some color variations (different coin values), so I suggest to work on layers, to avoid using colorize (or something like that) on every part of coin.
Fifth: keep working, and remember, everyone of us started from small thing ;D so every contribution will be appreciated.

I tried to size the coin down a little bit. Instead of being 32x32 pixels, it is now 16x16 (half size). To make it look more 3D-ish, I had to make the coin 1 pixel thicker across the bottom. If this looks like it might be the right shape/size, I will continue on to make texture and coloration. I was thinking maybe some type of design or emblem relative to either TMW, or maybe just the casino, but on the other hand, working on such a small scale, too much detail will just look jumbled. Any suggestions on this aspect?

Admitedly though, I am not sure how to do the layer effect you are speaking of i. Any suggested reading or quick tutorials? I created this much with just MSPaint, but I do have GIMP and Photoshop installed on this computer, if needed for the layered effect.

Thanks for the support and comments! Keep 'em comin'!

after a little more work and comparison to a male sprite (should have done that in the first place...) i think i finally have the right size. I just did some manual shading/shadowing, so let me know what you think.

there are 2 major things wrong with the pile for the casino coin

1. its a pile of coins, yet you only earn 1 coin for picking up a pile

2. what will be used for gold drops from killing a monter?

i still want to use the pile of coins, but for a gold drop instead of a casino COIN drop.

i dont know if monsters should drop money  they should drop items that you can change for money, but not money itself.

(thats my opinion)

We should have a different icon for different amounts of coins.

Offtopic: I'd love the idea of taxcollectors as monsters that are adept at parting you from your money.

I agree with rotonen, If you kill a monster and get a casino coin then you should have a graphic for just that one coin. Then if you have more than one coin in your inventory you should see another graphic which has more coins in it (like the current one)

Exactly! That is the point of the single coin I drew. My feelings wont be hurt if mine isnt used, but the idea is that if a single coin drops, show an icon for a single coin, not a bundle of coins.
