I'd say option 3... which would be something between 1 and 2. 2 doesn't have an outline at all and in 1 I think it's too strong. But they both look good nevertheless.

I on the other hand perfer 2 which doesn't have outline. But it wouldn't fit in well with the rest of the tile which has dark coloured outline (not black). So yes, option 3 as mentioned above is probably the best compromise.

Here is the first tileable version of the dirt tile, its not quite what I want but it’s a start

1 or 2 lol

I was thinking wouldn’t it be interesting to have large tree trucks which fade away as they go up into the sky. Then we could have shadow cast from an unseen forest canopie just like in Zelda a link to the past just after you pull out the master sword.

2 maybe? I personally can't see a whole lot of difference, two just seems a touch lighter maybe.

number two has no pattern and the grid is broken up

and I had hoped it would appear more dirt like

Is it possible to have dirt that doesn't span the whole tile? Maybe half a tile or 1/3 of a tile?

Yeah. If all dirt is one grid in width and height, it will look blocky and unnatural, which I think is the biggest problem in your diagram. For example, the plant will always seem to be on the same "position" on the dirt.

Having half dirt will allow more flexibility between dirt and grass.

I think adding some variation tiles would do.
