I was rather thinking about tilting the guitar. Moving it sideways looks strange.

I think making it go sideways blends with his movements better than diagonally would.

Blending with the movement? The guitar in your last picture looks like it is moving on its own in the hands of the bard...

How about this?

Apart from the right hand (on the left from this perspective) looking a bit weird somehow (probably just the elbow from this perspective and scale), it's a quality piece of animation.

So now we need the notes from Crush?

On a second more critical look, he does hop during the animation. Stepping is not a problem, but hopping looks weird.

That's a .gif thing. That's only because I align images by their head and feet in .gifs and since I can't do that, it gives the effect or hopping.

The second to last wasn't aligned;
try this:

Now all is missing is the strap around the fellow and you're done.

As a guitar player (amongst other things) myself, I portray the vertical play position as more relaxed and suitable for a marketplace player in a good mood playing cheery music. (Mostly you only hold the guitar upright for the demanding stuff in classical Spanish guitar.)

That said, it would indeed look a bit more natural if it was not 90 degrees straight, but slightly tilted. Multiples of 45 degrees are your enemy. If you have clothing, limbs and guitar in separate layers from the guy (as it should be, if your workflow is thought through, imho), tilting it should be trivial. After that it's just a matter of (anti)aliasing the neck of the instrument again and doing some minor tweaking on the other layers.

Also, while you are at it, try bending your wrist that way holding something and keep at it for more than five minutes.

Btw, I wouldn't think a primitive guitar such as a lute would be demanding enough to require tilting.

Anyone else see the same? And yes, it looks suspicious, but it was me who drew it after all.

It's only about a few pixels forming the bulge / corner at the wrist.

Ok, I think I got it this time.
