Mockup 2 tries to push in too much direct detail and hence looks simple and not especially good. The details are too equal to each other.

In mockup 1 we have a good example of "details through imagination". You clearly have the essential details and all else is there just to support it to be a complete something.

Zoomed in, both just mess and don't make sense, but your mind fills in the details and makes it look good as a whole. That's in my opinion the very essence of pixel art.

(Yes, it's about the contrast difference making the light show. It also makes you concentrate more on the details the artist in question has felt the need to highlight. Makes it more alive. You're not reproducing reality here, you're making an approximation and you need to compromise about which details to get in there as the primary characteristics at our scale.)
This message used to be meaningful.

Those new trees look really great. But the recolorisation of the rocks looks strange.

By the way: Nice to see you back, Len.

Hi, long time no see.

I just finished my last term in school, so I have time to draw more pictures now that I am graduating. Inspired from this thread, I have also created a tree.

Does it fit in with the mana world's style?

Very nice, could you make one version with snow on it for the ice area aswell? We are currently in need of trees so we can implement new maps.
Lazy bum.

No, I don't think that trees with leafs would fit into the ice area. The only trees there should be fir trees.

But it would surely be a good replacement for the current tree in woodland when it would only be two tiles wide. Can you try to make a tree with that look which fits into 64x96 pixels? Maybe using the same color palette Len used for his last tree so that both trees work together properly? Then we would have a replacement for both old tree types from the woodland_x3 tileset.

I could scale it and apply Len's colour scheme for leaves like this:

But because of the smaller size, some details are lost.

Btw, Len's trees are also bigger than 64x96.

Automatic resizing won't do. It blurs the graphic too much.

It doesn't blur, just that some pixels will be lost. But it does look ugly at 400%. I will see what I can do.

In-action shot of trees together (i resized Lens tree slightly by cutting away some random horizontal and vertical lines):

To make the trees work together properly it will be necessary to:
-Unify the trunk color
-Add a stronger shadow to the second tree
-Make the second tree taller (by making the trunk longer)
-Add a dropshadow to the second tree

The modified woodland_x2:

I think the color is as good as it can be. But there is still a problem with the shading. Note how Len has a much more intense shading with a strong hue shift to blue. When you were able to copy this it would be perfect.
