I love the graphics I see in this game. I was wondering if they are free to use in a different project as long as we give proper credit

No.

The GNU General Public License is a strong copyleft license. This means that you can use our content only when all derived content is licensed under the same license. You may use and edit our graphics, but you have to release the end-product under the same license and thus garant everyone the same rights that were garanted to you.
