[WIP] The Tritan race sprite sheets

by bcs86
TMW Wiki entry for Tritans
This is still being worked on, but more direction would be helpful.
Issue 1: The feet will be too big for human shoe sprites.
Issue 2: Many hats will probably look wrong.
Issue 3: It frowns; albeit suitably fish-like.
The Tritan's eyes will be oriented more to the sides of its head by the ears.
A female version has not been started at this time.

EDIT 2009-12-30: Attachments were cleaned up. This is stalled at least until the playerset is more mature.

I claim no authorship on the sheet. It is a derivative work.

First off, awesome!

I've been breaking down the player sprites into a components library so we can better assemble NPCs (either through hard layering or through offsets in server/client layering), and to make it easier for us to flesh out the much needed remaining frames for different character actions and attacks... to the point, I know the face fins aren't going to be such an issue (see the current player's hair styles clipping through helmets for example), but we will want to look at modify the existing footware in consideration for the Tritan's feet (which are the widest of the proposed races).

I've been secretly wanting Tritans and Ifriton for a while now! It's good to see work on these. :D

Can't we just say that the tritan's has to wear special footware because of their big foots, instead of blowing up all footware, just because one race has such big foots? It will also make the race a bit different than humans. If all races can wear the same equipment, what's the point of the race?

Other things. :P

Before doing any of the other races sprite sheets, please finish the basic playerset sprite sheet, it is still missing things. (Also then you do not need to come back to these later to add what is missing.)

Please let them do what they enjoy. Extending the playerset is a huge task because it would mean adding the frames to all current equipment. It is not realistic unless we face an artist with the necessary amount of determination.

Rather than adding boobs for a female version, why don't we go with some sexual dimorphism for the fins on its head? In real life, many fish have large fins and vibrant colors to attract a mate. Some fish are even much larger than the female, or the other way around in the case of the angler fish.

In humans, estrogen (the female hormone) has been linked to larger eyes and thicker lips in high amounts. In reality, these are features commonly looked for in women because the more estrogen a woman has, the more babies she can possibly have, and it's an evolutionary trait in men to look for mates who can have the most children.

So how about for the female, we make the eyes larger, the lips fuller, and the fins on the side of the head smaller?

Fother_J is working on component libraries.

To make things easier for artists, we need to keep the basic body shapes the same between races.

Fish people can have boobies. Look at the Legend of Zelda.

Also... if we want we could called them "egg sacks".

The work has to be done in any case and the sooner we finish the playerset, the less equipment we have to extend/redo.

For me this is the same kind of work as extending the base playerset would be.

Progress is being made on the Tritan sprite sheet, however I'm not quite ready to post an update here yet. Sorry it has taken this much time. Instead I'm thinking about what has been discussed between Rotonen and Bjorn about the human base player set and what needs to be done with it. We do have three older "getting hit" sprites on the wiki, but I would need to know more about the essential frames that the human base sprite set must have before work on other races can continue.

Every frame that is added to the human player set must have all of the armors updated for it. That doesn't scare me, but that doesn't mean I can easily achieve it for us alone either. We have to also consider that these races might be deemed boring, Frankensteined recolors by players. I'm doing my best to pixel in what was proposed. It said "Please apply this appearance to all of the frames in the existing Human playerset." It is being done.
  • I'm assuming that, aside from the getting-hit frames, we are going to also be making:
  • Spell casting animation frames with their associated wands.
  • Swimming frames, maybe exclusive to this aqua race, or maybe not exclusive.
  • Animations for anything and everything are desirable.
As for the Tritan's big webbed feet, I will continue drawing them unless told not to. Tritans will then need their own footwear if they are to be playable.

For female Tritans... still don't know and don't want to disappoint.

The transmutation wizard outside of the woodland village mentioned in his instructions for the parum spell that the monsters had to be called by their Tritan language names. That had me associating Tritans with certain powers until I was told not to expect the eA details to persist. For that time my idea was to make the current Tritan more majestic with some gold markings around its eyes and on its body.

I'll do what I can without getting in over my head, but the work will only be fun when it is done.

Hi,

just to give some background: the Tritan/old-race-whose-history-and-language-is-closely-related-to-magic connection came about due to a wiki article on the backstory that made me consider them to be significant in that respect (I can't think of any other fantasy setting where the seadwellers are the principal mages, even though there's nothing morally wrong with it-- so it sounded like a good idea). The Tritans we're seeing now might be descendants of this once-glorious race and may not be so glorious anymore (think Roman Empire vs. warring medieval Italian city-states).

Or they might not. As you mentioned, Auldsbel's dialogue is eAthena only and, therefore, irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. ;-)

(Note that this post is pointing towards off-topic, so if a backstory person-- do we have a backstory person?-- chooses to reply, then a separate thread would be in order.)

(Note#2: Great job on the spritesheet! :-)

Swimming animations are not worth the effort, in my opinion. But we need two more attack animations - a swinging attack and a more versatile trusting attack - to allow more melee weapons than just knives.

Slashing Animation

There seems to be a general consensus on this thread that most favor the last slashing animation posted on this thread.

I'm thinking that the out-of-water Tritans (which are also the 'playable' tritans, if they become playable) have intermingled ;) with the other races and thus have lost their undersea abilities despite physically looking like Tritans. Ergo, their feet do not have to be large and flappy ;). The pure bred Tritans live only in their sea world and are NPCs (they can be animated as floating, etc).
