[FND] Hassan: Assassin NPC?

Here is a test to see if this is a good idea to continue cleaning up for the assassin armor quest. I named him "Hassan" at the moment. I pictured him as the "Old Man on the Mountain" type of assassin. I used Black Don's pachau redo as the base because it seemed to make sense for this race to be in the desert mountains. Anyways, I hope this seems like something interesting.

It seems that there are other ideas on the NPC for the assassin armor, so I'll just leave this as a floating [WIP] in case someone else wanted to use this NPC for anything and clean him up more for whatever purpose.

He does not look like a "terrorist". He looks like a member of a TMW race that lives in the desert mountains, wearing a "desert hat" and assassin armor.

hoom... Of course one reason of being like a terrorist is the arabic theme.( U know nowadays people are a little suspicious about this theme.) I think it`s better to change the name into something less arabic ,for example, sinan( It`s an original Hashshashin name.) or fathaly.
.

Any way it`s better to use an assassin mask instead of that dessert hat.

The historical assasins were branch of shia islam.

I don't know how well this works with TMW's policy of avoiding references to real world religions.

I'm more using the legendary "Old Man of the Mountain" and Marco Polo references, which is fitting to western fantasy for this example.

Marco Polo wrote:The Old Man kept at his court such boys of twelve years old as seemed to him destined to become courageous men. When the Old Man sent them into the garden in groups of four, ten or twenty, he gave them hashish to drink. They slept for three days, then they were carried sleeping into the garden where he had them awakened.

When these young men woke, and found themselves in the garden with all these marvelous things, they truly believed themselves to be in paradise. And these damsels were always with them in songs and great entertainments; they received everything they asked for, so that they would never have left that garden of their own will.

And when the Old Man wished to kill someone, he would take him and say: ‘Go and do this thing. I do this because I want to make you return to paradise’. And the assassins go and perform the deed willingly.

— The Adventures of Marco Polo

Here goes some examples of how it was implemented in a table top rpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assamite

The mystical nature of the assassin blends also with the eastern fantasy of the japanese ninja, which were also forced into the mountains of Japan and developed their own brand of assassination much in a similar flavor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja

Anyhoo, my basic point was to draft an NPC that would offer the assassin armor and it seemed to make sense to use the desert race because of their exposure to snakes and snake venom and their minority status in the game, along with the "medicine man" mystic qualities they began with blended well with a race of people that would use asymmetric warfare tactics that define most cultures of assassination.

It should be noted that a lot of native americans that used asymmetic warfare also mixed this same blend, if we are looking at the various cultures in the real world as to "why" an assassin would be created in society.

http://www.greatdreams.com/apache/apache-warriors.htm

Again, these examples also expose mountain regions as a host for this warrior society. Anyways, I can hunt down more examples, but I think the legendary qualities from historic reference was more a defining quality for why I chose what I did for the NPC test rather than any sort of reference to "terrorism" or real religion.

I don't know if you intended for this to happen, but his name is EXTREMELY similar to the Arabic word for forbidden, harâm.

His name literally means "good-looking" (hásan) in Arabic, though.

I intended to use the name "Hassan", which is the root of "assassin".

Rotonen is right , It`s gfx dev. but i have to say Hassan is not the root of assassin,Hassan is an arabic name which means someone good in behavior .Hassan i sabbah was the former of the Hashshashin group.

Last time to discuss the name. After this, no more of this tangent.

Etymology
Wikipedia wrote:The designation assassin is commonly believed to be a mutation of the Arabic haššāšīn (حشّاشين), an oblique plural of hashshash. It has also been suggested by some that assassin simply means followers of Hassan (or Hassan-i Sabbah). Although a contemporary variation on the theory described by Burman is that haššāšīn was a derogatory epithet applied by the sect's Syrian neighbors who regarded neighboring Nizaris with suspicion due to their secretive society, fondness for philosophy and heterodox theology which gained the ire of the more traditional. The term may have originated as a metaphor[6] to describe the Nizari's odd behavior as "crazed people," as in "those people who are addled, as if by cannabis", and that epithet may have gradually been presented as fact by later enemies of the sect. The Nizari use of narcotics has been dismissed as myth by contemporary scholars, but it must be remembered that it was a popular myth during the period. The term Hashshashin (a name given to them by rival Islamic sectarians) may have been derived from the Arabic "haššāšīn" (حشّاشين, "hashish user"), although this remains unclear. It may also refer to "those who produce hashish", however this etymology is also disputed. The word Hashish (of probable Persian origin) refers to resin collected from the cannabis flowers. An accurate definition of the word in Persian is actually "healers" or "herb sellers".[citation needed] The popular viewpoint may have influenced the crusaders, and certainly Marco Polo's fabled account of his visit to Alamut in 1273 makes reference to it.[7] By either or both of those two sources the corrupted term "assassin" may have entered western vocabulary.

The first thing that comes to mind is a person with a black leotard and balaclava that is surprisingly agile (think ninja assassin). The more modern assassins though, are people who look just like you and me, have the ability to blend into crowds easily and are able to convincingly play the part of a number of disguises/aliases.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but the actual assassin gear seems to have alot to do with Japanese assassins, and the Arabian theme doesn't fit well into it.
