I like sleeping version more, but it should look rather like that:

Or:

Not like unconscious junky.

Heh, I was actually planning to make a 'narcoleptic' NPC a while ago, then I came across this thread and thought I should finish the animation for AFK purposes.

We could just have an AFK or AWAY sign above the character... but it would be nice to make a sleeping emote/animation. :)

Yep, that's better. I would like to see different levels of conciousness. If you hit "away" the character sits and has a quick nod, if you are away 5-9 minutes the character starts to sleep (zzzz and bubble), if you are away 10-15 minutes the character lies and sleeps like the drawings Platyna posted above, and so on....
And linking this with the various states of drunkness.

A table read "AFK" or "Away" is lame, it is a Role Playing Game not MSN or IRC. And I think one model - a sleeping person is quite enought of our needs. Sure, when we have chat system which allow PMs a nice away autoreply will be useful feature as well. There should be simply a command or a button which will put you into afk mode.

Regards.

im likin the little z's idea or the bubble...no sign. thats dumb. i also think that there should be an idle animation just in case you forget about using the afk command and an option to set idle time
