In theory, there are 1024 file descriptors available for connections to a server, minus a few reserved for various things (stdin, stdout, stderr, the connection to the char-server, and the savefile come to mind). That number *can* be increased but requires recompilation with the current code; one of the things on my list is to rewrite with poll() or epoll() instead of select(), which would allow merely changing the ulimit to work.

That number can also be significantly increased by splitting different parts of the world into different map-servers. Although this works in the code, there are issues with a lot of commands that only work local to the server.

In practice, performance seems to really die around 100 players. Running the different servers on different dedicated physical machines would definitely help with this.

I don't know how much of that is algorithmic and how much is the limitations of the host system. Although Platinum is a sufficient host for a game in development, it is not the place for TMW to truly thrive.

Well, I am joking, of course bigger community= bigger amount of potential contributors, but we should take quality over the quantity. After all, the community is a biggest magnet, when there isn't much content.

I believe that TVTropes could be a source of a rather high quality of players. Everyone who reads TVTropes is at least literate and capable of the english language. People who like to take an analytical approach to media are usually people who are smart and mature. I am sure we will get along with them.
