night and day

Post by cinderweb »

I know this won't be an easy undertaking so i am asking the community's suggestion would you like night and day cycles with probably more mobs in the dark.
If you don't care then just vote yes if you don't want it please explain why and get some discussion going.

thanks,

How do you plan to implement it?

What gameplay value does this suggestion add except "probably" more mobs in the dark and how do you want to do this exactly?

im still unsure but i will know more abou tmwa-adventures and o11c said it was just a few lines of code to implement it. that's as far as i've got .I read the old thread about it and Think i could help o11c by shading and repixellating for the dark once we test it each step of the way.

The *server* concept of night/day is easy.

The *client* concept of night/day would require duplicating all content ever written.

Client should just allow night/day/rain/etc. to change out a specific imageOverlay like "dayOverlay" and "weatherOverlay"
The secret to getting all the important stuff done is doing nothing.

I can think of a few ways that day/night light/dark could have effects.
  • It could be a simple graphics/mood change (like some overlay on the client). The graphics examples in the previous thread look really neat!
  • It could be the graphical overlay plus a change in music.
  • It could affect strength or spawn rate of monsters.
  • It could affect strength of player character attacks and defense.
  • It could have specific effects with certain items. Ranged attack is more likely to miss unless you wear a candle helmet. The "Glowing Shield" gives chance of reflecting damage to undead monsters during night.
  • It could affect magic spells: strength, duration, effects, or number of mobs summoned.
  • It could be used for certain quests. "Return to me at night when the Scarebou is out, so I can finish this spell."
In general, I think day and night offers opportunity to enhance gameplay. Whether we have developers who will take advantage of those opportunities is a different matter. (This is not a jab at our current devs; merely recognition that we might need new people to make this happen.)

Conclusion of that thread: Doing it hackish would be easy (just apply a color-filter to the graphic output to make everything darker at night). But that would cause lots of things to look strange. Doing it properly would be a huge undertaking for content and client development.

IIRC eAthena already had such feature. Unless o11c removed another "unneeded thing" . And I can propose, say, skeletons/fallens/etc, etc to be far stronger at the night if its not too hard to implement. Could make gameplay more diverse. So as for me I really like idea of day/night cycle. Seen this in other games and think it improves gameplay.

This is a really great idea, it would make the game more fun in my opinion :D

Some ideas:
  • In the night could be spawned more aggressive (that could also look more evil) versions of some creatures present during the day.
  • Probably it's better if in caves/dungeons the monster spawning remain unchanged.
  • So for example, in the night Spiky Mushrooms could disappear from the outdoor places, and the Wicked/Moon Mushrooms could take their place.

If feasible, I think it would be a nice addition to game cohesion.

Some thoughts about it :
  • Maps could contain different monsters during day or night.
  • Special monsters could appear at a certain time.
However, if it's set to server time, some players would nearly always play during night or day, according to their timezone. Maybe gamedays should be shorter then.

Yearly hidden monsters randomly appearing would be funny too ! :)

that's why it is set at 7 hours that way everyone will get to play in theday sometime and everyone will get to play in the night sometime

Night possible with overlay or/and layer or layers.
I not sure only how good or bad it can look.
If need additional layers can be hidden from old manaplus versions.

Another issue what now server totally unsupport day/night.
Old status as i remember was implimented as player status.

i was told that server side it is simple to implementbut we would need support from the client for it.
