Lol, I just think that what ever crime they committed (item scamming, password scamming, offensive language) should be above their head, while in jail/prison. I also think there should be a jail for minor crimes and a full scale prison for the really bad crimes. The jail and prison should be like a normal prison, maybe make it so that it is one cell per person and maybe like normal prisons make it so they can only see during certain times. Like they can talk to each other and stuff, but make it so that is black screens them (lights out) at night or something.

I was just looking through eA's code (and yes, I know that you're transferring away from eA, before you complain that I don't know what I'm talking about), and there is one mapflag that I think would be useful for a prison, and that is "notrade".

You're basically trying the recreate the black hole from RuneScape where rule breakers were frozen and their accounts were placed on display. :?

Actually I am not. Runescape does not and did not have individual cells for the bad players. I also was thinking that the players can still move around in their cells and talk to other inmates beside each other. Here is a sucky map of what I think it should be like:

I know it sucks, I don't want to detail it. The black is the individual cells, the red is the doors on each side (the top one can be a wall or something), and the orangish color is the road.

I'd prefer people to be behind bars.

RuneScape Classic however did have a place where rule breakers were held and people could see them. RuneScape now has a jail cell room where "gublinichs" are kept in separate cells and you can read about why they broke the rules on the placard on their cell door.

I think it should just be to where everyone is muted and cant trade but people can vote them out of jail (like if the victim wanted to forgive the rulebreaker) if they wanted them out

I started reading this topic and suddenly, as clear as water, I had an insight. I was not going to write this, but after a while I got it stuck on my throat, because I really saw this as an alternative. xD

Well, I see the game prison as a way of punishment, but it is so boring, usually because:
a) if there is a prison map, it is separate from the rest of the world, thus free players can't see who is being punished neither why is being punished;
b) if one is in prison, banned from the joys of the game, s/he can pay his/her debt offline, logging in hours ago already out of prison;
c) after all, punished players often commit the same mistakes as before, meaning that prison-like punishments doesn't really mean anything (though I must agree it's not always the prison fault).

So, what could be done? I'll tell you: stocks and pillories.
(Check out my pixel art :lol: and the following pictures:)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Chap ... Stocks.jpg
http://www.guestlistwebarts.co.uk/terra ... illory.JPG

These stocks/pillories should be placed near the entrance of a well populated city (e.g., Tulimshar), thus players could see if there's someone being punished while they are passing by. A sign (just one, working as a NPC) close to the stocks/pellories would tell the name of the banned players and the reason why each one of them is there.

For practical use, I personally think pillories are easier to implement than stocks. Stocks would occupy 2 tiles, pillories just one. Stocks seem to be permanent, i.e., it has those rock bases stuck on the ground, and without it the device would be 'escapable'; pillories are only made of wood, giving a just-made and tighter appearance.

The pillory graphic effect would be just one for all the characters: a naked player (without equipments) with the head and hands locked into the wood. Actually I thought of this whole thing to be just one, but just the head of the char would change (because of the hairdo). I don't know if I make myself clear, but anyway, another way to do it could be building the pillory as an equipment item, but I couldn't figure out here how to make the player wear it. xD

The player should be immobile, "tradeless", but not muted (perhaps a limited number of lines per minute?). I think the idea is make people realise being banned from the game is not a funny thing, so a funny way to put it out (lol?) is having the banned people stay online an especific amount of time according to what rule was broken. Yet one can be online, but AFK... This I was not able to "solve".

Oh my... I wrote a bunch of stuff.. Anyway, this is only a suggestion. I have no real idea how it could be done. I'm really liking the game, so thinking of new stuff to develop it is kinda easy. I hope you like it, but if you don't, it doesn't matter.. xD I know the final decision of this topic will be good, otherwise it would suck >__<.
(In fact I liked the "black hole", but it's so... black. O_O)

Cheers.

Your stocks are named incorrectly. That would be a rack.

The idea of public pillory punishment, e.G. forcing people to spend their online time on public display for their misbehavior, sounds quite original for me. It worked well in medieval times. It had been abandoned in modern times because of the humiliation involved but I think that the personal separation to a character in an online game is large enough that this is not really a problem. By the way: The american law system is rediscovering pillory-like punishments as alternatives to prison sentences:
http://thewritingonthewal.net/?p=2374

But note that such a punishment is especially hard for people with limited online time. A 12 hour pillory punishment is nothing for someone who can leave his computer online during the night and while at work/school. But it would be very hard for someone who can only spend 2 hours a day online. This would mean he would have to spend a whole week of his gametime doing nothing but serving his sentence.

Maybe use a system like the new death system to keep them busy while online.
