Quality control on furs (Agostine's Quest)

Post by Taliesin »

I suggest that for each fur that gets rejected, the chance of the next one being accepted should increase slightly, to prevent players being victims of the vagaries of the random number generator, as I seem to have become.

This has been prompted by my extreme frustration in trying to complete the quest given by Agostine the Tailor. I got the gloves with little trouble, but I've had 130 furs rejected so far while trying to get the boots! That's just crazy. (Note - that 130 rejected furs does not include furs rejected while getting the gloves.) I must have killed around 1500 or so Fluffies by now, and to say that it's getting a bit old would be a huge understatement. I still don't have the boots, and I'm struggling to find the motivation to carry on with this quest.

Trying to complete this quest has left me both bored and frustrated, and I'm sure that isn't the gaming experience you want for your players.

Perhaps some kind of 'rejected furs counter' could be implemented, and as the number rises, the percentage chance of a fur being accepted could rise with it.

Implementing that could be difficult. It's a good idea. The forest bow quest could also use it.

Try something like this

Code: Select all

(RejectedCounter * .02) + DefaultChance = Chance
Random max=20 min=0 Output=X
if X < Chance
     Then
give boots and other stuff
     Else
"this fur isnt good enough"
close

Would that do it?

Both NPCs use the exact same mechanics. The only difference is that the forest bow has a one in twenty chance and the winter glove a one in thirty chance.

as I remember my forest bow cost 3x raw log's + npc fee  but I dont think this mechanics should change ... works clear and fine !
Agostine's Quest cost me like 200 fur's but that was really strange ill try explain why ...
so first I collected like 20 or 30 fur's and was very happy  but no gloves/boots, then decited do same thing. 100 fur's or so was gone. Then decited do collect 50-60 and it works for my.
Maybe was unlucky.
later ...

Reading the replies of other users, I seem to get frustrated sooner than others. But probably that's because I know what "addiction to morpg" means :P
Anyway, while I got the gloves with "just" 33/34 furs, I already wasted two full batches of 36 furs on the boots. Together with the fact that I wasted 26 logs for the bow with no luck yet, that indicates some sort of "flaw" on the algorithm part.
The biggest annoying part of morpgs is the fact that you usually need to mindlessly kill monsters over monsters to get xp... and quests are supposed to break from time to time that mechanic... in this case, agostine's quest reinfortces the tediousness.

I know this sounds strange, but I got my gloves after 2 furs, and my boots after 3 furs! But my log quest was 17 logs, I think we should have that fur counter thing, since I've got my other char called Leo! I want to get boots for him. But it may take a while :O
Level 74 now, wooh! xD :) (My main char is now Leo!) Image

just for the news... I went to alan with a batch of 40 logs (mind you I already had wasted 26)... well I got out with the forest bow... and 6 logs left.
Total SIXTY logs to make the bow.
Sum it to the 72 furs wasted on the boots, statistics and all I do think there's a flaw in the algorithm, especially when other people get those items with just a few tries.

I would not say there is a flaw in the algorithm, I would say you all just have really shitty luck. Because that is all it currently is now.. roll a thirty sided die. If you get a 1, then you get the boots. Any other number and you have to roll again. You could roll the dice a MILLION times, or just two.

That being said, I like the collection quests to be difficult, but not extremely so. Maybe a .1 increase or .02 as suggested would be appropriate.

It is supposed to be a challenge. Personally those quests to me would lose a lot of value if the chance slowly got better as I failed. First time I did the Forest Bow quest I spent over 130 logs, yeah talk about bad luck. Anywho when I finally got it I was ecstatic with joy and a sense of accomplishment. It was awesome to have earned my Forest Bow through hard work and exciting trials.

Robbing the players of this potential experience on the grounds of "wasting my time" means you should probably not be playing a role playing game, since "rolling the dice" is what RPGs are all about.
