i downloaded it off of ubuntus add/remove program last week, do i have to download it again each time theres an update?

No, just every time the client is updated, which isn't very often.

You can install the intrepid ibex package, if you need to.
Lazy bum.

The automatic updates can only update the game content.

Program updates have to be done manually by installing the new version over the old one.
