If anyone has the capabilities to start their own server or host a new server I suggest/request an official PvP server.
It would be a brand new eAthena based server exactly like the current one (and hopefully upkeeping with all the content updates) except that PvP should be enabled everywhere except in towns to allow for more open and free competition.

There is always the risk of the server just becoming a massive gank-fest, but we could place limits on who you can attack, or simply place a warning to people before they create a character on that server.

What do people think of this idea?

I agree. If anyone has a bored server with huge harddisks which cry for some content, don't be cruel to that machine and bring some fun to it's circuits, please...

But I'm not sure how much work it would be to establish such a server even if there really was someone with a spare "computing troll". Would it require some changes to the code of eAthena? Or just some scripting?

Just content changes, though it can easily be done such that you don't actually have to change any content.

Hang on. I don't know much about this sort of thing, so correct me if I'm wrong, but is it not possible to have more than one game running on the same server (like "realms" I think they are on WoW)? So we could have one computer on which both the ordinary server (or realm - I get confused with the terminology) and the PvP server/realm are hosted?

It's possible. Characters won't be shared, but logins will (notice that server box that comes up after you login?).

Cool. That sounds ideal to me, so long as it's practical.
