If it was available to a minority it would also be nice...

I tried compiling the tmw client on Linux but it seems that it gives compilation errors if the --with-server=tmwserv option is used. Or more precisely, linker errors.

Code: Select all

./tmw/src/net/tmwserv/inventoryhandler.cpp:95: undefined reference to `MessageOut::~MessageOut()'
net/tmwserv/tmw-inventoryhandler.o:./tmw/src/net/tmwserv/inventoryhandler.cpp:95: more undefined references to `MessageOut::~MessageOut()' follow
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [tmw] Error 1
I think that there sure are a lot of people who would happily play an alpha version of tmwserv if it was more-or-less playable, and it could be the first step for final migration.

Our last attempt at a public alpha test was everything but productive.

With the latest code from git?

Now it does work!
Thank you. I don't know if you did change something or if it was because I recently switched back to ubuntu 9.04 after some problems with karmic. The new GUI theme looks really nice.
There doesnt seem to be servers to test it, though, so I'll probably have to build the server too.

Not productive in what sense?
There were technical problems or there was just no player using it? were there precompiled binaries available?

The people who used it provided no usable feedback and did not contribute to the goal of the test phase which was to create and balance the game content for the start phase.

Do you still think that we care about player numbers?

yes.

I guess you didn't promote it much since I can't remember that.

Lets just do it like Rotonen wants, drop eAthena completly and go 100% tmwserv.
This way we get less players, less forum posts, less ebnrs and maybe more bug reports about tmwserv.

meh.

I would like to test TMWServ, but I have absolutely no knowledge of compiling code. I also agree with what Matt said.

How can the current eAthena server provide more usable feedback to get closer to the final 0.1 release than a testing tmwserv could?
what exactly happened? you got the wrong feedback or you just didn't get any feedback?

More players means more statistics, more logs, and normally more bugs/suggestions found.
Perhaps the lack of feedback was a consequence of low player numbers?

EDIT: btw, I believe that content balancing alone won't bring the server any closer to the migration to tmwserv. Personally, Ii wouldn't matter to me that much a 0.1 release with unbalanced content as long as it has some of the intended new features for user interaction (guilds, chat channels, etc).

Nightlies are being setup again.

I do remember some nightly builds , long ago but:
1.They where hidden in an obscure URL , that was only mentioned in some thread deep in the forums , so the chances that someone heard about them was rather low.
2. IT is much more easier to report bugs , when you play a game 2 hours a day and see a bug randomly while playing once a month that trying to debug a game which isn't enjoyable because it has no contents i guess most people , downloaded the nightly played 5 min to see the new features and went back to Athena saying wow i want that to be finished.

SO here is my proposal :
1.Announce at the new's page "0.1 is available we aw now in transition phase".
-. announce it also at the 0.0 clients "update window"
2.at the downloads page add links for 0.1 binaries next to the 0.0 binaries
3.by the way the contents of tmw.mericet.de (another obscure URL  ) is mature enough to be incorporated to
themanaworld.org NOW.

I do not now if it is possible but can you just copy Athena World as it is and implement it at TMW?
if you did that tmwserver would become massively ("TMW massively") played and adding new features and developing tmw server own's content would just come in the future with client / server updates and releases.

IHMO , most people dont care if TMWserver is finished / perfect they will be happy enough to play if it is playable enough , then bug testing would become more effective.

4.When a large group of players play TMWserver just kill TMW client (with a warning a week before) , and you are done , work can be focused to TMW server.
I d not think it is going to be finished on the current path.

I keep seeing this quote from everyone that is suggesting to move to TMWserv is "if it is playable enough". Last time there were some problems in the play of the game and Dev knew this, but was wanting some info on stats that never got cause people just keep harping on the "playability" problems. If you want to know how playable it is you can down load and set up your own server and see for yourself. Then come back here and say if you think it is "playable enough".

Nightlies are being setup again.
For what OSs? I read a topic about Windows nightlies but I don't have Windows.

The Windows client works perfectly under wine. And compiling yourself under Unix/Linux/etc is far easier than under Windows. We may add more nightlies later, but Windows is the priority at the moment.

If you are under Ubuntu/Debian you'll have to open a terminal and enter this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get build-dep tmw
sudo apt-get install git-core libenet-dev
git clone git://gitorious.org/tmw/mainline.git tmw
cd tmw
./configure --with-server=tmwserv
make
That should compile it.
The tmw executable will be in the src/ folder, you can run it from there.
If you want to install it you can type "make install" (it will overwrite your previous tmw installation, though)
