Shout: STOP it at least!

Post by Nard »

I am fed up with the falsely quite atmosphere around this game and about the constant lack of frankness there is. Also my vision of what happens doesn't allow me to take a great care of my words. So I will call a cat " a cat". This is an exerpt of a conversation I had recently. It is a good example of the usages in this project and their consequences. THEY HAVE TO STOP!.
Nard wrote: If o11c chose as manaserv developers to develop a new server, I would agree with your opinion. but he did not make this choice. the question is not the amount and the quality of his code, but the way he manages the project. When you plan to work on some part, you don't need to remove another one which is unrelated to the first. to improve your car lights you do not need to remove the tyres (yes I exaggerate a bit, but no more than you do). There would be no complaint about o11c if he didn't take a special care of having peole he doesn't like for some reason out of the project; with some success.
remark:
Anti spam system: it still has to be improved, because players are still randomly kicked, and it would be unbearable if 4144 didn't find a work around 3 years ago, and wrote an efficient patch on the client.

About the poll: since at least a third of the 500% "pros" occured an hour and a half before the poll was closed, I have zero trust in it and I am not alone. It looks like a massive call to help and close before it could get back to no (in the best case)

Also, for years it has been said to players that lost item consecutive to bugs would NOT be replaced. o11c repeatedly said that they could be liars (this included me even if I asked for nothing). This time, the only (known) players who have items replaced are.... developers. Imagine the effect on players.

Maybe some of the improvements were important for TMW, but the effect of such a release is as disastrous as were the unfinished buggy quests releases in 2010. Jenalya stopped that. but Jenalya has left the development, and the image you give is the one of a boat with no Captain.
Did you notice that there were only three dizains of players at the beginning of the european afternoon and east coast morning, a saturday? Check the mean number just six months ago, compare it with 2 or 3 years ago too...

Regards

Nard
We're doing the best we can here.. SO MANY things have gone wrong. And it's nothing technical.. It's people arguing and hating each other and even *actively* sabotaging each other! The social aspect and fighting in TMWC is 100% the reason why this release didn't go very well.
Nard wrote:I agree with you except on the technical (and content) aspect, but the unsolved technical gaps may also be a consequence of the other aspect. I am here since Easter 2010 and my first idea was to contribute with sound and music which is one of the fields I know a lot. But as soon as I tried to bring my 50 cents I was agressed (or I felt so) by people who are obviously ignorant or (very) low skilled. I also saw DOS and DDOS attacks against people who think different, account cams, despise, botting cheats. All those things are against open source spirit imo. I always met social bullshit behaviour, more in developer "team" than among players, just as if they wanted to destroy what they are building, just as Penelope did long ago. The way the "move" was conducted is not different: it is easy to agree against one person, but it is stupid (and I weigh my words) to take the decision to build a project when you have no idea of what you are going to do, and how, and more when the "team" has so few in common; and more when members or supporters leave the boat six months after the project started. You cannot build a castle on moving sands especially when people don't want even to hear you (yes, hear, not listen!) and let their ego speak rather than reason. Not all developers were like that but a lot among the best ones left because of that and players are fed up with that. they are fed up that the ego has priority over their fun, that's why they leave, and as noone wants or is able to make the dirty communication job or have interest in it because it is transparent to players...
o11c: he is a problem by himself. He behave somewhat correctly until the move, because of Platyna, in front of whom he had to bend. But now, he is a leader and his attitude on forums since the move shows it clearly (he may be a bit different in private): "I do what I want and FY if you don't agree. you are an idiot if you don't think like me" He is also able to abuse of the compassion his disease may inspire to others though he is perfectly able to behave better; I was surprised to meet this kind of behaviour when, as a teen and a bit later, I had holydays with disabled persons; they are just humans like everyone.

If you (collective) want this project to continue, someone has to shout "STOP! This projects priorities are (put what you decide here). You have to work for and with other people, all in the same direction. You have to respect forum contributors, even more when they are noobs. Put your ego in your pocket, comply or you leave".
When nobody does that, the actual isssue is the first of a serie which will end in the project collapse either because players quit or admins resign; I fear that Frost resigns before o11c because he showed RL constraint before the move so he is the "weak" point.

In my opinion, and I said it to o11c at the move time, the best solution for TMW (server) is switch to evolserv, make xxx or yyyy?, zzz? server development leader.. server development should focus with priority one on lag problem; then on content development (add features instead of removing some ); Add debug points to code that is suspected to be buggy. rewrite existing code only when needed or nothing else to do. No suppression should occur if you can't explain what it does AND you plan to replace it with an improved better one; even in this case old code should be backed up commented and archived, just in case. Code should be commented and documented properly, it is not the case at the moment. This is not how o11c works.

I am now rather pessimistic about the future.

Cordially yours

Nard

PS California Law requires TOS and Privacy statement, on Wiki and forum, I think wiki can hold the web site and game ones. Just my 50 cents.
I agree with almost all of that, and have done what I can to get things moving in the right direction. A few other TMWC members are yelling "STOP!" too and trying to define some project goals and a code of conduct on the way developers should behave.

There's really nothing more I, personally, can do at this point. My energies are spent.. TMW is no longer fun to me again.. I'm taking some time away. Until people can work together instead of constantly fighting.. Until people can be welcoming and nice to new people who want to help out.. I'm done. This is toxic and not good for me as a person.

This is Toxic for anyone. If you cannot stop to let your auto-destruction complexes speak and go on to blind yourself, this project has not much more that 6 month to live. You can ban me or censor me once again, I have no care about it, I feel obliged to do so because of the nice ideas that were the basis of this project, because of the huge amount of efforts that authors put in it (including o11c ;) ), because of the amount of people who believed in it, because I'm sad to see only 33 players in a Saturday afternoon 57 players before Prsm's Event, 78 during it and back to 55 a little moment after. If nothing is done and soon, my last post on this Forum will be the next one.

Note: Since the beginning of this project the login server and the char server do not even have a way to quit properly and a decent management interface, the char server has barely the minimum. If it is enough for a coder, or maybe for the production server, it is a considerable cumulative time loss for content developers and probably to server developer too.
I'm pretty sure I was clear about why you have been warned. You were exploiting a bug, repeatedly, abusing players both in Hurnscald and newbie players in Tulimshar. I have watched you move next to a new player, summon wicked mushrooms next to him, attack them, and then change the map, so that the mobs would attack that player. That was targeted abuse. It wasn't random spawning, or you having fun. You did the same thing in the Tulimshar mines. And after being warned about it, both on the botcheck map, and then in whispers, you did it again in Hurnscald, and then you logged off immediately after that to avoid punishment. That's not playing, or having fun.

The TMWC has been fully notified about what you have been doing, and my reaction to it. You are free to talk to them, complain about what I have done, and they can discuss it and make a decision about it.

Until then, I'm locking this topic.
Troll was banned for griefing newbies in Tulimshar, by exploiting the bug. The exploit hadn't been an issue before because the summons weren't as powerful. Why do I have to keep repeating myself?

Troll is my guildmate. I like him. I don't need you to tell me how nice he is. But he wasn't being nice that day. So he got spanked. I didn't escalate the issue, he did. And what's worse, the issue had been resolved days ago. Why are you bringing this up again? No, don't answer, I don't care. This is my final reply on this issue.

I know what the rules are, Nard. I've been playing this game for a while now. I'm pretty sure the player community thought I was familiar with them when they voted for me to become a GM.

Maybe you should spend some time reading things, though. For instance, this thread.

Or this:

It has always been possible to kill people by using this trick and many did it. This is one of the reasons why Manamarket has such a status and has been brought in this special place.
I spent more time than you to read the forum and post last three years.
Rules are rules. Forum threads never have replaced them and never will. This is especially why I quoted wiki, the sentence was written by o11c himself to replace the unfinished page which was waiting a TMWC decision..
You don't know, me, I don't know you; then I don't care about your opinion about me. You brought the fire, there is no need to put oil on it. GM wiseness would have been to submit the issue to comittee before taking a decision.

I know that as well, that's why I moved AuctionBot there temporarily, too.

o11c does not set the rules, nor does he enforce them. He is a developer. The GMs are there to enforce the rules and interpret them as they see fit, within reason.

STOP this now both please, i really like you both and i am really sure that you both want to help TMW.
Probably I interpret you both wrong, but I think it helps nobody to tear each other apart over not so well handled situations.
I surely dont know all the background, but to force somebody into a corner will not help to work out a solution together.

For example at last server update, sometimes i had the impression its like witch hunting o11c. Probably he is a not easy to handle guy, he has surely mistakes like we all have some, but he likes to help too and we cannot burn such people, if something goes wrong. Its surely no fun for him to cause problems or to built-in new bugs. Big updates can cause problems and o11c helped to repair it. In my opinion very fast! And the updated informations at TMW-homepage about actual situation after server-update is really good, next time more soon such an overview and its perfect.

To make ideas how situations could be handled better would help more instead of criticize players or devs (@Tux & @Void knows that i did this mistake too).

Let us stop to bite each other!
This gameworld should make fun, its about to meet foreign people from all over the world and to see that we can laugh about same things and have same interest.

Yes, TMWC is supposed to make the rules! But as any TMWC member, he is supposed to know them and well . So what am I supposed to think when he writes something like this with some authority? Wether admins can enforce rules or not, this you have also to discuss in TMWC because various admins have various opinions and attitudes.
The fire was out, and it wasn't caused by me.
The fire is in, and yes you are not the only, nor the the main cause (I was wrong on this particular point). But negating that there is a communication issue between GHP-TMWC, developers and players is just laughable (and for a long time).
Boy, you guys have picked a wrong GM in that case. :)
I do not try to "pick' any GM, and I am sure that you are aware of the rules, thus you are absolutely sure that yours is not included. Your decision was taken "on the grill" so it was somewhat a difficult one, I just want rules to be clear to players and they are not when you have to seek in different places to be aware about them. TMW would be the first game to allow this. More if various published versions are different. This was already a conflict point before the move, so before you became a GM. Even GMs complained about it to Platyna.

Oh, btw, Game and forum rules haven't been changed too.

+1

Nard, you know I really like you, so please don't take this as a kind of attack or something (and I'm really not saying this as a phrase):

What you did in-game yesterday was not okay.
If you have personal problems with o11c and Crush (I thought this was solved btw...) please let them stay personal (and I'm really refering to the personal problems you had with them, regardless who was right or wrong, there was hardly any dev stuff you criticized).
It is not nice coming out of nothing talking bad about people in public and making other people believe those two are bad persons without giving them a chance to make own impressions.

The result of this conversation was that the people who listened now think that TMW's devs/admins/forum admins in general are evil and will ruin the project in the feature and that Evol is more awesome.
And except that Evol is really awesome, this is rubbish.

Though I think feedback is the most important thing devs and admins can get, I believe that this thread is just about the in-game discussion of yesterday: your personal frustration.
I can understand a part of it (see here), but it's just not nice to involve other players.

Please think about it :(

Oh, and of course I wouldn't want you to leave as the player I met back then when I started in March... it's up to you in end.
I hope you will enjoy the game again.

There is no witch hunting against o11c, just a request that he stops to have a beach behavior to others. When you want other people to work with you, you don't caress them with sandpaper, but you try to provide them with the information they need. Positive attitude is to try (at least) to understand others especiallly when you pretend to be an administrator of an international project with language nuances difficulties. If, on the opposite you say that you are right including on topics where you are a noob, do not complain if you are treated roughly: knowing how to deal with GIMP doesn't make you an artist, knowing what is a midi file and how to press the keys of a small synth doesn't make you a musician, knowing how to code doesn't make you a project manager (reverse is true too)...

To stop biting each other and take care to think that others can see things very differently is the purpose of this thread, if I was not clear enough. I intentionally use acid words only to try to make everyone realize that the situation is now critical.

Edit:
@Cassy: I have no personal issue with crush or o11c. I don't know them irl, and didn't even play with them or only a few times; I know them only through their forum behaviour. You will easily understand that I cannot admit that one of them implicitely calls me an idiot, and that the other one does nothing.
You obviously didn't hear me well. I never said nor even thought that devs and admins or moderators are evil. I contributed a bit to this project a small bit, and still have most of them in high consideration regarding their skills, and that includes o11c and Crush. I can think though that they are can be sometimes blind and deaf and that the social behaviour of some of them is just ..... No project can hold very long this way.

While Nard seems to rant well beyound the level I can handle (I'm having trouble to read SO much ranting and parse it, even if I thought I'm not bad at ranting), I can admit there is one point. Latest events had price: today I detected there was only 13 players online at some time. No, there was no disconnections, network issues and somesuch to the best of my knowledge. It's "native" state of server at certain time. Seems to be absolute anti-record of all time I play here. Now I think it's a bit more clear why I'm so jealous on any messing with player accounts and rolling out bugged/troublesome updates. Couple of more actions like this and I'm afraid TMW's main server would be abandoned desert like Platinum or test servers. Basically what has been done is turning main TMW server into testserver and screwing up login for half of players. It's really wrong approach unless devs want to play on main server alone.

But let's disagree with one particular thing from Nard:
Anti spam system: it still has to be improved, because players are still randomly kicked, and it would be unbearable if 4144 didn't find a work around 3 years ago, and wrote an efficient patch on the client.
I guess you refer to packet rates limiting? In fact it's not just common practice but also it's a proper way to do the things. Server should disconnect or ban overaggressive clients. Many other server systems behave this way. Try to aggressively flood in IRC and at very least you got disconnect, for example. After all, processing incoming data could take some resources. Hence its okay to put certain limits: server health valued more than particular client issues. And 4144 implemented "another half" of proper packet rates limiter. While he named it really strange, similar feature exists in many other protocols, not even really related to MMORPGs. The only issue here is that packet rates limiter should be enabled by default, at least for TMW server. Sure, its some catch for new players not aware of how network protocols are working and hitting "Z" by 100 times a second. In fact all networked software should defend self, because networks are all about being external world, full of hostile things.

Nard wrote:The fire is in, and yes you are not the only, nor the the main cause (I was wrong on this particular point). But negating that there is a communication issue between GHP-TMWC, developers and players is just laughable (and for a long time).
I did not negate that. TMWC is aware of its communication issues. Players are aware of that, and so am I. Don't put words into my mouth.

Do you know what I've been doing for the last 3 days? I've been trying to minimise the damage for the players. If TMWC has a problem, I'm not going to be a part of that problem, I'll do my best to fix it, even if it gets me thrown out of the damn committee. I don't give a rat's ass whose feelings get hurt in the process, as long as the players' interests are protected.

Most of that time, I've been talking about how communication both between the TMWC member, and TMWC member and players needs to be improved. Things didn't go as planned and my temper flared, so I disconnected from all TMW IRC channels, before I said something I'd regret. I figured I'd cool off and we could try this again.

And what do I find after that? I get Chocolate Cupcake from you for a problem that doesn't even exist anymore.

I don't have the time, nor the will, to deal with your little hissy fit which targeted me personally even though you apparently don't have a clue about me or the situation that had transpired.

Do you think this is helping? Do you think adding more sides to the battlefield is productive? Right now, you rank lower than Mr Who with me. You're trolling, same as him. Unlike you, at least he was funny.

I'm not locking this topic, as it seems to involve me, but I hope someone else will, it's kind of pointless.

Melkior, if any one else : GMx or GMy than you took this decision I would have said exactly the same. And I already did. So there is nothing directed against you personnally, but against the fact that, when rules are changed, it must be done correctly. I said that after the no follow decision, I didn't change my opinion. Rules have to be clear to anyone, as in other games, easily reachable in game, on forum, in wiki; and this before they can be applied.
If you knew me just a bit, you would know that I do not have any opinion about any person before I have deeper contacts than those we can have by seeing each other in a game.

@t3st3r: about the autoban. I have no doubt that there must be a server protection, and however it is done I don't care as a player. In my opinion there is still a problem of sensitivity as I never encountered such a strong one anywhere else, IRC; any other network game, any other server of any kind. Thus my remark: there is still a problem, what or why, I don't know. 4144 called his patch "protection against buggy servers", uncheck it and experience ... as far as I know this protectoin has a price, 4144 will tell you about it far better than I am able to.

Yesterday we have made some mistakes.
Yesterday we was not aware of our behaviour.
It was yesterday.....
Now, today...what we can do?
Complain about yesterday?
Be overwhelmed by the frustrations of yesterday?
And today??
When we says "have a nice day", it's for today, its not about the old assumptions of yesterday.
Yesterday we was wrong...and today??? we continue the same mess???

you can say, i'm right, it's only from your perspective - always.
you can say, he's wrong, it's only from your perspective -always.
So....
We must continue this open war???
Because we love to much yesterdays, and yesterday it was cool when i cut off your leg and pull off your skin, crushing your bones....my beloved old days...

Because the last who's speaking is right the entire forum is full of this kind of battle.
or we do our best or we continue the same old Chocolate Cupcake : make your choice

Shout: STOP it at least!

this is the name of this thread so respect it plz
Must i add something else??

Hello.

I wasn't following the forums both tmw.org and tmw.org - I was recovering from my heart problems - so I wanted to spare myself any upsetting content.

I am very sorry to see that my progonoses are comming true. Of course we all remember that o11c denied that all the move was about is to gain power he craves so much.

About the rules - of course they didn't changed - they were carefully thought of, simple and fair. There is no reason so change them.
melkior wrote: o11c does not set the rules, nor does he enforce them. He is a developer. The GMs are there to enforce the rules and interpret them as they see fit, within reason.
Well, this is quote the sign of the time that has come.

Well, I should let you know the machine bought for TMW for TMW player's money is rotting in my living room. If TMW ever decides to move back I can accept it.

You are SO right Platyna. I was a fool to ever doubt you and your ability to lead a small project even when resources such as time, talent, and money were donated. When can I leave this miserable power hungry Chicka-Maria-always-breaks-the-server-but-still-has-production-server-privileges-for-some-ungodly-known-reason Mana World for your divine euphoric Mana World?

Could we change the 5 minute ban for killing the Caretaker's wife with shrooms to whatever punishment Melkior gave TroLL so that any interpretation of whatever rule was interpreted to be applicable in TroLL's situation is consistent?
