That would be neat.
But it should come with some option. Which character you want as your avatar and whether or not you want an ordinairy custom avatar.

user defined avatars have been in the talk a long time ago already.
i guess we got to the conclusion that it wouldnt be good for users with slow internet connection.

The European Ragnarok Online uses a forum system that uses the ingame characters of the posters as avatars:

Although the system is quite incomplete because it only shows the class and the gender of the character with the default hairstyle, the default weapon and without other visible equipment.
