Community Manager

Post by Reid »

Developing everything "behind" the community is a bad mistake, we suffered from it on Evol as everybody thought that the project was dead while we were daily working on it.
It appears that the dev team drifted away from the community since some times. We will try to port visual development (graphics and maps) on the forum instead of this irc/git-only world.

We will also try to keep our social pages up-to-date, here is the list of Evol and ManaPlus social links, could somebody do a list for TMW's ones too?

OpenHub (ManaPlus) https://www.openhub.net/p/manaplus
TuxFamily's Wiki (Evol) http://faq.tuxfamily.org/Game:EvolOnline/En

PlayDeb (ManaPlus) http://www.playdeb.net/software/ManaPlus
OpenGameArt (Evol) http://opengameart.org/content/evol-online
LGDB (Evol) https://lgdb.org/game/evol-online
LGDB (ManaPlus) https://lgdb.org/engine/manaplus

As per some discussion in game, we will need somebody to work on this task. Somebody that know what happens in the development and that could handle the job of a a Community Manager / Press Relation.

Couldn't agree with you more, Reid. As being said in game I think we should have some stripped-down and simplified version of a github Fusion page, specifically with players in mind, so that they could get a bird view of what's going on. It might even be in wiki.

As I said on IRC, this is a job that one or more GMs should take on. I'm not trying to take this for myself, in fact I don't really want it at all. I do nominate myself to do this at the moment because I'm the only one who really knows what's going on with development.

Here is a (hopefully complete) list of social (and some other) media used by Evol, ManaPlus and The Mana World. I have summarized the following they have where possible, added my opinion on how the site can help the project when I had one, and wrote if I'd be willing to help keeping the place active and up-to-date where applicable. There may be errors and wrong assumptions, but I tried to keep them low.

DeviantArt - Reid (Evol)
  • Evol 18 watchers
  • Seems very popular with artists, but I'm not sure how much it contributes as a social and awareness medium.
  • I'd not be willing to maintain this.
(diaspora*)
  • Unused as of now.
  • Might get us some following from people who are either interested in ethical technology or optimists.
  • If we choose a good pod, it can push posts Facebook, Twitter, Wordpress and Tumblr.
  • I would be willing to maintain this.
Facebook - Chicka-Maria (TMW) - Reid (Evol)
  • Evol 121 likes, TMW 624 likes
  • Probably the most popular social network ever. Should keep lots of people informed and involved.
  • I'd not be willing to maintaing this.
(Friendica)
  • Unused as of now.
  • It seems to be a network offering to push posts to other networks, like diaspora*, Facebook, Google+, Twitter and possibly others. I don't know how it works and would probably need to investigate more.
  • I might be willing to maintain this.
(GNU Social)
  • Unused as of now.
  • Might get us some following from people who are either interested in ethical technology or don't like Twitter.
  • There may be a way to push posts to Twitter, but it seems to be more complicated than in diaspora*.
  • I would be willing to maintain this.
Google+ - Reid (Evol & ManaPlus) - TMW Admins (TMW)
  • Evol 48 followers, ManaPlus 47 followers, TMW 184 followers
  • Rumours say its active community consist largely of tech-savvy folks, seems fairly popular.
  • I'd not be willing to maintain this.
Google+ Community - Reid (Evol)
  • Evol 23 members
  • I read it's community discussions and involvement for Google+. I feel like we have the Forum and IRC for that, but I don't have the experience to say if this helps in any way or not, nor what attention it requires.
Imgur - TMW Admins (TMW)
  • TMW only
  • From my experience, this site either has people use it as quick image hosting, or browse it for funny or interesting pictures. I don't see much benefit for a project or even community there.
IndieDB - Reid (Evol)
  • Evol 7 watchers
  • As the name suggests, it seems to be a game database in the first place. I would expect a few people to find it there, but fairly low traffic in general. It feels like a useful profile to keep and get major updates for.
  • It can fetch tweets from Twitter and link to the homepage, which should reduce maintenance costs.
LGDB - Reid (Evol)
  • Evol 7 popularity 3 gamers
  • I don't see much social involvement necessary here. There seems to be mostly static info and screenshots that can be updated once in a while. Seems useful to have.
(MediaGoblin)
  • Unused as of now.
  • A media dsitribution platform that should soon implement federation. Working instances available (but not federated yet). Can be used for showing off video, audio and other things to people.
  • I would be willing to maintain this, or at least try.
OpenGameArt - Reid (Evol)
  • Evol 1 favourite 1 Reid
  • I wouldn't expect this to figure much as a social platform, but if it helps the free game community, it should definitely be utilized and contributed to.
OpenHub - Reid (Evol) - TMW Admins (TMW)
  • Evol 6 users, ManaPlus 6 users, TMW 16 users
  • I just don't get this website.
Patreon - TMW Admins (TMW)
  • TMW 4 patrons
  • As I understand it, this is from where TMW gets donations to stay online. This is doubtlessly very useful.
PlayDeb
  • ManaPlus only
  • It was in the list, but I wouldn't call it social. It just appears to be a source for packages. (Didn't investigate very much.)
Reddit - TMW Admins (TMW)
  • TMW 30 subscribers
  • This website seems to be considerably popular, especially with internet-savvy users. It could keep some people informed and easily involved.
  • I might be willing to maintain this.
SourceForge - TMW Admins (TMW)
  • TMW 14 ratings
  • As I understand it, this platform is used for development, distribution and discussion of software. Seeing as less and less people use this and we have other means of doing all it should do, I wouldn't think it's very useful.
TuxFamily Wiki - Reid (Evol)
  • Evol only
  • It was in the list, but I wouldn't call it social. More like documentative and informative. (Didn't investigate very much.)
Twitter - Reid (Evol) - TMW Admins (TMW)
  • Evol 25 followers, TMW 58 followers
  • As famous as Facebook, quite popular. Should keep some people informed and involved.
  • I might be willing to maintain this, although I'd prefer not to.
YouTube - TMW Admins (TMW)
  • TMW 64 subscribers
  • Most famous video platform, linked to Google. I suppose this serves mostly for distributing video content to people, although it's probably useful for some feedback, too.
  • I'd not be willing to maintain this.

I would like to add that (if my understading is correct) there are client programs which allow sending posts to multiple services at once, and thus save the maintainers some time. Those I looked at usually supported Facebook, GNU Social and Twitter. Further investigation may yield more universal software, though.

What I think could be done is linking to the more useful or apt networks as to social networks, and separating from them the sites which serve mainly as source of information or database. That will make it clear what both readers and maintainers should focus on for frequent news, and what should be kept in the back of our minds, updated once in a while and provide static info and discovery.

There are also the websites where development is managed. I believe it's GitHub for TMW and GitLab for ManaPlus and Evol. It looks like development will be moving to GitLab, which I think is a good decision and a step up from GitHub.

I hope this report is going to be helpful in some ways. May our community grow and thrive! Aquada pie!

EDIT: Added the known maintainers (people with access) for each network. Further changes in that aspect will still fall under this EDIT notice. (2016-09-28)

Thank you so much for the list! What do you say we divide social media between us? Chicka has access to many of those pages too, so we should speak to her about all this.

Sure thing! You buy Facebook and I'll get Google after winning the lottery a few times.

Jokes aside, still sure thing. I'll keep to my preferences from the list though. Some of those do not have a TMW account yet, so we should somehow determine if we do wish to use them at all.

Ok good now we have a list:
But maybe it will be better to have differents small team who can work on each social network to keep contact with community (for sure they must work all togheter).
Its not the GM job !
Lot of Social network give the possibility to delegating tasks with different rank of responsibility.

You can aslo creat a new official group: "Developer, Game Master, TMW Adviser, TMW Contributor, TMW Team, Tester" why not to creat "Dommunication" ,"TMW Social Network" or "Community Manager"

The way I want to approach this is to simply keep access and keep an eye on all social media, while having somebody else actually run each separate account. It's impossible to ask one person to keep everything updated, but it's fundamental to keep one person in touch with everything.

I am in the process of putting together a list of active social media accounts and assigning at least one other person than me to run them. I will put all of these people on a mailing list and email news posts out whenever we have a new one.

Facebook - Chicka-Maria, WildX
Twitter - WildX
YouTube - MAF-Saulc, WildX
Reddit - Tomminator, WildX
Google+ - WildX
Patreon - WildX
DeviantArt - Reid
IndieDB - Reid
MediaGoblin - Tiritfto, WildX

If you want to run any of these pages or you would like to see another site added to the list, please post below.
