Remove TMW Classic deprecation notices

Post by Reid »

Our main server has been marked deprecated as we focused for quite a long time on porting our current world into a new server support, although, we encountered some issues along the way and our main running server is still the most active server.

So this is a poll to remove the deprecation notice and to mark this server as being in an active development shape to respect anyone involved in its success and to maybe bring new contributors along the way :) .
This poll will run for 10days so that we can gather as much opinion as possible and discuss everything together.

PS: this is not the end of our rEvolt and Evolved sub-projects running on Hercules! These projects can still be worked-on but our main game focus will remain TMW and ML.

You imply TMW Classic is deprecated, which is an obvious lie.

It is TmwAthena codebase which is deprecated.

You are aware all of these repositories are duplicated, right?

One has "DEPRECATED" in them and live in legacy/ namespace ─ they're the files used by TmwAthena engine.
The other doesn't and live in evolved/ namespace ─ they're the files used by Hercules engine.

Otherwise they're symmetrical, have exactly the same game with the same quests, same content, and their live databases are exactly the same (with the same players).

Could you make clear what exactly do you want here, rather than being misleading? Do you want to make TmwAthena active again and no longer deprecated? I really don't mind, but please, stop wording petty lies and go straight to the point.

I'm talking about deprecation notices written on TMW Classic's git repository and any other deprecation notices that could be noted anywhere else about tmwa and TMW Classic.
This software and game project is still under active development and has an active userbase that is not worried about our technical debts so this poll is about removing these notes to make these repository more welcoming following some recent comments that were received from fellow contributors and players.

These notes can be found here:
https://git.themanaworld.org/legacy
https://git.themanaworld.org/legacy/clientdata
https://git.themanaworld.org/legacy/serverdata
https://git.themanaworld.org/legacy/tmwa

I disagree with that statement. As I said earlier, the game project is still under active development ("TMW Classic") and has no deprecation notice whatsoever.

The software however is neither under active development (last I checked ─ if devs want to revive it and work with it, then I'll be happy to remove the notes) nor has an active userbase.

As I mentioned on Discord, contributors and developers are supposed to go to https://git.themanaworld.org/evolved which is the same game you're playing (TMW Classic) but with the other engine. The deprecation notice serves for that purpose. However, I know devs prefer to work wherever they have checked out at the moment (which led to an ugly nesting and auto-generation and stuff).

Because as far as game content goes ─ maps, quests, graphics, player data, everything ─ both evolved/ and legacy/ are exactly the same (or supposed to be exactly the same, it is not like we were forcing developers with a knife to use repository A or B, it would be perfectly possible to archive the whole legacy/ namespace and nothing would break because that. No, not even the game you're playing on, even if it does pull from legacy/ repository, as there are some converters translating stuff from one to the other. I can't vouch if they're working 100% right now, though).

Those links all have have a deprecated notice on git. I see no lies here. I understand it was based on TMWA's deprecated status, but it has seen active development for some time now and the server and client were never really deprecated anyway. I do wonder the implications of changing the git URL though. What will all of us git users have to reconfigure? I assume git history would be preserved.
