those new beams are awesome....i would say try and make em a little more rugged, or older looking, probly some knots in the wood ..or warped areas or darker burned looking areas...just so they arent so perfect.

I see we're going toward a mine, this concept could be extended further with rails, pickaxes, gems, ores and stuff so it could fit as a dungeon in the snowland. Keep working on it!

Instead of creating new topic, I decided to be a little bit necrophiliac and revive this thread, because it's subject, caves, really needs our attention... soooo

I recently experimented with creating a chasm and hole (maybe possible one way entrance to lower levels of caves? eventually we can introduce, through some quest, a rope..) they're still unfinished. I just want to get some feedback and opinions on them...

Hey yosuhara...

The chasm: Think it looks good, maybe it should be a little closer together in the middle OR the ends (up and down) should come together in a more acute angle...

The hole: The cracks around the hole look good, realistic, but the hole is - in my opinion - too round, just like a perfect circle... that's a bit unrealistic I think.

PS: I really like the idea of a rope... ;)

The cracks look good for themself but I think they don't really fit into the other cave tiles. They even stand out when just surrounded by the basic ground tile without any walls around them. You should try to make the transmission at the edge (especially the left one) a bit less abrupt.

I attempted to make some wood in the style of those from the lost garden tileset, I used the stump from the forest set to make it :)

yeah, it "jumps out" too much...maybe lowering the saturation and/or darkening the colors would help a bit? besides that, it's hell of a good work Len :)

Its not the saturation so much as the level of detail and sharpness compared to the walls of the cave

You pinpointed it exactly. Conclusion: either you must restrain yourself to not be that good or we finally need to rework the caves to match up with those nice beams :D

I'd vote for cave revisions.
This message used to be meaningful.

I agree. How about something like these for the cave wall?

or would it be better to use a bigger tile (128 pixels in height) like this?

I think you might have the opposite problem I have, your color pallet is very boring (although the work itself is very good)

(take a look at these screenshots from FF3, Chrono Trigger, and SD3)

Also AxlTrozz and I tried to come up with a new look for the caves sometime ago

Those graphics are too plain in my opinion.

Actually I rather liked the first two. I reckon if they were developed they would make a good style for the cave.
